I know there's a lot of fans here so it seems worth linking to the special 200k deal Paradox are running.

If you use the offer code from here you can get 50% off any of the games Paradox published before Heir to the Throne came out. Full list of Paradox's published titles here. Basically everything there is eligable for the discount, minus the pre-orders, Arsenal of Democracy and Heir to the Throne and maybe a few others.

There's a load of good strategy games on that list.

Offer is available on Gamersgate only. For those who don't know the service, there's no overall program like steam or impulse, no DRM unless the title's info states otherwise, no special installers, no need for different patch versions, nothing but a link to the .exe file.

The deal doesn't apply to it and its not out yet, either. Not until late this year. But from the developer diaries they are releasing, and PI reputation, it does look really good, and more 'realistic' as in they are introducing gameplay ideas such as Spheres of Influence, which is brilliant as this allows for wars such as the Austro - Prussian War or the formation of Belgium. The one selling point for me with Victoria 2 is that it is a 'project' of some of the developers (as in the 'big boss' didn't want to do it as he believed it wouldn't make a profit, like Victoria) and I feel that they'll put a lot of effort into so it sells well (they are even more personally motivated then other developing studios).

Thanks for the alert. I bought Victoria Revolutions and EUIII:Complete. Its a shame they don't have HTTT or Arsenal of Democracy up with the deal as they both look like good additions.

I wouldn't go too much by the DD's. They always appear cool and when the game comes out, the AI which wasn't covered by DD's is plagued by stupidity or irrational decisions, like in HoI 3, for instance.

I bought Knights of Honor thru this deal? Anyone familiar with it or having have played it? I'm quite dissapointed with it to be frank. Before I even get started the AI sends large armies to attack me, even armies across bodies of water. I can barely raise one unit of peasants in that time. I tried a money cheat to no avail as well. Would patches solve this problem, or did I just buy a lemon?

I think I'm going to go for some of the AGEOD games. I've been trying out the demos and they're quite good, even if I don't care for any of the settings.

A few of us here have played KoH, and the majority verdict was that it was a good game. The final patch is version 1.05 so check to see if yours is at that level and if not, patch it up as the game improved quite a bit as the version numbers increased.

On the surface KoH looks like it should be a simple, low level medieval themed kill-em-up strategy title. It's not, and that deceptive impression will lead you to disaster. You need to look at the wide view, plan, use all of your tools, and move steadily.

It's been ages since I last played. IIRC you need to play the diplomacy angle quite a lot. Make allies, improve relations, and so on. Most of the early AI armies are filled with peasants so a smaller army made out of decent units will win handily. The auto-calc feature is balanced well, and so you might prefer to use that rather than fight the (rather disappointing) field battles. I know I did. Use your knights. 1-2 marshals will be plenty for all but the largest of empires. Then hire others according to your gameplay tastes, i.e. if you want to use a lot of intrigue then hire more spymasters, if you're waging a religious war get more clergymen, etc.

FWIW, two of the most popular (or at least best-received) AGEOD titles seem to be American Civil War and Birth of America II: Wars in America. I've not yet played either myself however (although I've been extremely tempted to get BOA2), so I cannot comment on them directly. Still, both games have received a lot of kudos.

Also, Rise of Prussia appears to be getting a generally favorable reception, although of course it doesn't benefit from the GamersGate sale (since it's a new release). Still, it sounds like it's one of the better (if all too few) treatments the Seven Years War has received in PC gaming in a while. I'm actually very tempted to get it, but have been holding off in hopes that a boxed physical copy will eventually be available.

Conversely, I recommend you avoid World War One – La Grande Guerre like the plague. It's been roundly criticized as being -- by far -- the worst AGEOD title to date. They're apparently now working on a much-improved "gold" version, but it won't be available for at least another several months (if not next year).

I played the demos of all Napoleon, America I, America II, and Civil War. I found something to like in each. They all lean in a different direction, so while there's a lot of similarity each one is suited to a different kind of mood. Civil War is the most combat focused and has more economic layers on the campaign. America II has a massive selection of campaigns, both large and short. America I is a bit simpler, a bit purer, less features and so a clearer core experience. Napoleon has a good balance of all of these traits.

I went for Napoleon and America II in the end. Then realised I had enough blue coins from past purchases to get a half-priced America I for free. And then I learned that rating games you own gives you more blue coins, so I did that with a bunch and voila, combined with the blue coins I had left over I only needed to pay something like £5 to get Civil War. 4 massive games for around £20 in the end, not bad at all.

I do like the campaign map. I like it a lot. Yep, lots. It's not hideously ugly, in fact it's rather nice to look at. Consequentally it's a lot clearer to understand; I'm not left playing the "hunt the province boundary" or "guess the terrain type" minigames. Paradox should take notes, since it's basically their campaign map's less ugly cousin.
