    hi baz,

there are actually 4 campaign maps, not including the minimap at the top left. there are 2 lukmaps and 2 maptex maps. one is in .lbm file format and the other is a .tga format. someone said somewhere around here, that photoshop doesnt handle the .lbm files. dont know, i dont use it.

    the files are in med-totalwar\textures\campmap

and paint shop pro apparently doesnt handle the .lbm files correctly either. however, there is a program listed in the downloads of the .org that is supposed to be able to handle them. in fact, i think there's two programs listed there that do, ultimate paint and graphx2.

for more help on this, check out the lukmap thread that is stickied near the top of this forum.

    baz,

    which borders? maptex or lukmap?

you prolly want to read the thread on lukmaps posted above in the stickies.

changing the lukmap map can be quite tricky, as some are finding out. this is the map(s) that controls the functionability of the campaign terrain, and there is a LOT of stuff connected with it, whereas the maptex maps are just a simple visual display that match up in size with the lukmaps and are, in essence, an overlay of the lukmap maps and these can be edited without changing any of the functions of the game.

in all honesty, i've not worked much with either of these yet, so i dont have all the answers. barocca has done some stuff with the lukmap maps, but i dont know if he's got a full altered terrain campaign going yet or not. others have modded the visual aspects and this is much easier to do.

you also have to worry about other files when altering the lukmap maps; things like the minimap map and a number of other files and settings. a LOT of stuff in the early, high, and late.txt files are linked and coordinated to the lukmap maps, like where you put the castles, ports, origin points and so on. it's NOT a straight alter-the-lukmap-and-i've-got-a-new-campaign sort of thing. there's a lot of stuff that is all tied into the lukmaps.

read the lukmap thread for some more info on this.

well, if it is just editing borders for cosmetic effect, then you can to a certain extent change the lukmap and *hey presto* - but if you are after doing a real job, apart from the (4 or 5?) lbm maps which need editing, you will need to edit the following things in the early.txt (or late or high) text files to do a proper job...

    Province Origins list
    Castle Positions list
    Province border list
    Province neighbour attributes list
    Province port positions list
    Province attributes list
    Province Ownership list
    Province resource list

and thats assuming you are not changing the factions...

as Krae said, it is a big job not to be undertaken lightly
    Have you seen the fnords?

yep, it takes a long time, but on the good side, it isnt hard.
The main challenges are your patience (changing all those coordinates for castles, origins and ports) and getting a good looking, hi-res map, i am not a very good drawer but i need a new map for my mod, i cant find anything higher than 2000x1600 or something with a suitable terrain, any good fantasy worlds map drawers around?
