I downloaded a free vBulletin skin (you would not believe how hard it is to find free skins for vBulletin) and browsed the XML file. It's not all that hard to understand, and it's pretty much the exact same as SMF. Since vBulletin is not free, I don't know if you can install two forums on the same site with a license. If you can, install a second forum on the site somewhere as a test forum, and edit the XML file to your heart's content. Tinker with everything.
A few tips for figuring out colors:
1. Light text on light background never works. Even when it's legable, like right now with the yellow on the light blue, it's still not a good idea. Note that light on light makes bold fonts harder to read (try figuring out which thread in a board has new posts without squinting, I dare you). Light text on dark background can hurt the eyes. Dark text on light background is pretty much a standard, and thus wont be as reviled as the previous choices. It's why the RTW skin was so popular. A good choice of colors can make a world of difference. Browsing other forums also gives you a good idea of what makes a good forum skin.
2. Google "color hex codes" for color codes.
3. When in doubt, ask for help. No man is an island, and if you don't know something about the XML file, someone else is bound to have the answer.
