Thread: Militia units

    Default Militia units

You might have seen this thread on twcentre, I'm posting here due to lack of response.

Anyway, how does the team plan to deal with historically unpaid units in the game? For example, pre-Marian Roman legionaries, and landed Successor phalangites? Surely upkeep shouldn't be charge for those units unless one is using them on campaign?

Perhaps you could use the free garrison upkeep feature, allowing these types of units to remain in towns for free? Once you move them out on campaign, then charge upkeep?

I don't think the levy feature that disbands the unit for part of the year should be used for these units. They could campaign at any time. Sure, you could perhaps use it for the actual levy units of these factions, but not these particuar units.

    EDIT: Apologies for my idiocy:

"The Klerouchikoi Phalangitai will be used to represent reserve pikemen, who unless in time of emergency are back home on their farms tilling their lands. In game terms this means that they will cost about as much as Pezhetairoi to recruit and will be free upkeep as long as they are in cities."

Will this also apply to pre-Marian Roman legionaries?

Everything that is known and that the EB team will release until they feel it's ready for a preview can be found here:

btw: 20 posts is hardly a lack of response... (certainly considering there's an EB team member that has answered in your thread.)

I remember Oddyseuios posting about seasonal recruitment and auto-disbandment being a possibility that is being explored for levy troops (who need to work their lands). Something along the lines of cheap and mass recruitment that is only possible during certain times of the year and units that can only last for so long before being automatically disbanded. Paid warriors woult not experience this, but they won't be near as numerous, elite or otherwise (though especially elite).

upkeep doesn't just represent pay for soldiers, it represents the entire economic hit from having soldiers in the field. Manpower is never free, even if you don't pay their wages. Having farmers on the field of battle rather on their farms costs the economy of the state. That is what upkeep represents.

And then there's the whole issue of feeding them - that costs money too.
