    Default A quest for opinions

I recently attempted a for-test-minnor-modification, gave the Epilektoi Hoplitai the phalanx formation ability, plus a sword fighting ability.
Historically speaking the Hoplites did fight in the phalanx formation and although their charge did pack quite a shocking punch, they seldom charged because it was very difficult to maintain formation while running.
The first documented event of hoplite charge was in the battle of Marathon, when necessity required that the Athenians minimized the time the would be exposed to Persian arrow fire.
The mini mod was a success, sort of. The animation worked perfectly with the hoplites fighting very well with their spears overhand and keeping their formation and any enemy at bay. Swordfighting was fine too.
One problem though, they were invinsible. I tested them against hypaspistai, against lybi phoenician elites (you know, the spearmen-axemen), against scordisci heavies, against the 2hp naked galatians. They always triumphed.
Having any unit be that strong ruins my fun but I still want my hoplite phalanx.
    Am I asking too much?

    Thanks.

I see hoplites did have the good-against-armor copis blade that early...

WEell, I'm not very on the side of mini mod, i like the EB as it was originaly made! But in my opinion, if you like them, why nor keeping them? the danger here is that you might end up in mass-producing them, and get easy wins every battle, thus ruining your fun. It's up to you man
Opinions are like bacteries : we all have, but it's better to keep them for ourself... (By me!)

The mini mod was a test case, not sure if I will keep it. It was easy to make and just as easy it will be to unmake.
The question really is how do I get my hoplites (all of them eventually) fighting the way they did historically without ruining the game.

    Shield wall on BI.exe helps.
Unfortunately there is no good way to make them behave properly with sword on the battlefield.
The best is yet to come.

    How did you do that?

On the invincible thing, maybe EB developers bumped up the hoplite stats to compensate for them not keeping phalanx formation? If so, then you'll need to tweak your hoplites down to compensate for their increased ability.

Well, for the phalanx I simply added the word phalanx, in the formations line for that unit in the EDU file.
In the secondary weapon line I copied the respective line from the copis armed thorakitai and pasted it there.
And finaly a added the respecive skeleton line in the battle descriptions file.
    No brainer really.
Still the epilektoi unit graphic fought with a xiphos not a copis. Just good.

Also I don't have EB installed on BI but on vanilla. If I reinstall it will it be save game compatible?

    Thanks

Are these the heavy epikratous hoplitai or the normal epilektoi? I was not aware that the round-shield hoplite models had swords included since they only use spears in the vanilla mod.

They are epilektoi with bronze/gold round hoplon shield with the scorpion graph and they fight with xiphos if the respective skeleton animation is added in the export_battle_description.txt file.
