Thread: All factions (minus rebels) playable

Default All factions (minus rebels) playable

    Hi folks

my nephew has just got into Total War and I forget how to make all factions playable at the early stages as opposed to playing through a campaign as the dratted Romans.

Please don't flame me as I am doing a newbie a favour!

How do I modify the game to allow him access to the joys of Carthage, Macedon, Seleucia etc. etc. Or should I just give up on vanilla and go straight to Europa Barbarorum?

    Thanks

    Sassanid

Sassanid: See below - hope this helps. Quoted from another thread... Go to the guide section.

"I don't know of anyone that likes unlockable factions, which is why most people do some text editing and enable all the factions to start with. See frogbeastegg's guide for how to do this."

    Hi Sassanid,
All you simply have to do is go into your R:TW directory, the data folder, world, maps, campaign, imperial_campaign and then into "descr_strat.txt". Then simply cut and paste all of the non-playable factions into the playable section making sure that there are tabs before each one. Then simply load up R:TW and enjoy the "new" factions. Enjoy your play, cheers!

If you want real challenges, real historicall accuracy and lots of fun, you should necesarily do this !

Rebels are playable in custom battles and multiplayer if you change a txt files...same way you get unplayable factions to be playable.

Just a quick point on the unplayable factions. I've noticed they have no maps or descriptions on the faction selection screen. Has anyone created any themselves and if so is there a way I could download them?

    Hi there,
Yep, it's more than possible - you can simply add a description for each non-playable faction in either your "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\data\text\campaign_descriptions.txt" file, if you have standard edtion, not Gold, or "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\data\text\campaign_description.txt". You can do this in this great file by simply typing this in the file two lines below the lowest faction in the list:
    Code:
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN__[factions code name, see bottom of post for list]_TITLE}[enter faction's on screen name]
{IMPERIAL_CAMPAIGN_[factions code name]_DESCR}[place your description here]
You must remember to leave a line between that and the next faction.

BTW, the faction's code names are:
    romans_senate - S.P.Q.R
    armenia - Armenians
    dacian - Dacians
    numidia - Numidians
    scythia - Scythians
    spain - Spanish
    thrace - Thrace
    slave - Rebels

After you have inserted the text you can repeat with the next faction till you have a complete list of described factions! BTW, the great Pontus and Macedonia do not require descriptions adding as they are already there.

    Hope this helps, cheers!

Ok that is a big help on the descriptions, how about the maps showing starting positions? Anyone have any ideas on how to get these?

    Hi everyone,
I've never edited any text in the game files before and I was wondering if I don't do this exactly right if it could permanently mess up the game or something. Sorry if I sound ignorant, with this type of thing I am..

No, if you do it incorrectly it will just crash when you start a campaign but it is really easy to make a backup and just go back to that if it doesn't work. One of the best things about RTW is that it is quite easy to make modifications without worrying too badly about messing up :)

And descr_strat.txt is very straightforward. One thing to note though, SPQR is not a stable faction, most likely your game will CTD if you try to play a long-term campaign with them. Just remember to keep a backup handy and if it does crash, follow the instructions here to turn on -show_err and then come back and post the error message and we'll do our best to help you ^_^

hey, i forgot the mod to make rebels playable in custom battles, does anyone know? Also, if you make the rebels playable in custom battles, will they come in quick battles?
Too bad you can't play them in the campaign game, it would be fun! Your settlements would be poorly defended, and there are different rebel types, but the best part would be that you would get armies up instantly anywhere in the game!!

Hm... I completely forgot how to do that, i'm about to head off to work but i'll look it up later

I'm pretty sure quick battles are premade by CA so rebels would not be a playable faction for them

And it is possible, just very buggy, to play rebels on the campaign :)

    The rebels...

go to descr_sm_factions and change the custom battle availability from a no to a yes. That should do it.
