Smile Best Unit on the Walls

I want you to share your knowledge on this forum about the best unit (for every faction) who can hold on the walls of important cities.

You think that axemen are better than swordsmen, or maybe falxmen are more effective on the walls???

But please, try to leave out the most expensive elite units.

I think that there must be units with high defense skills, without a charge bonus, because on the walls charge bonus is irrelevant.

Please post your factions most appropriate units of defending the walls.

Everyone who makes the faction - unit connections could consider that he has a balloon from me, because he deserves it..

Rhaetian axemen are my favourites. I ship them to all places when I'm playing a faction that has access to their recruitment/mercenary pools.

I love the Anatolian hillmen. Very cheap, but monsters against slow-moving infantry like the Thorakitai. Unbeatable on the walls

Sweboz do not use walls, only craven women cover behind walls!!

That being said, when you take a city from the craven she-men from the south, Slagonez are not always good, only if your enemy is armoured. Herunautoz, Druhtiz Bastarnistos or Rhaetian Axemen works fine then.

I often find that any unit with ranged weapons, even Toxotai, works wonders on walls.

AP Units are good, but not great. Try to make a custom battle, with makedonian hypaspitai, pedites extraordinary or spanish atack infantry (Carthago) on the walls. They killed every one without loosing one man.

Galatikoi Kleruchoi and Giusim Aravim Tsfonim (or other archer-spearmen) are very useful in a city defense.

Which is why most of their units are quite decent at assault. Xerunoudozez are best for this, unless you are going against heavily armoured units. Then you'd be better off with Clubmen or Worgozez. Though the latter are superior on walls to most units (due to incredible attack and defence skill).

The Getic Drapanai are superb at holding walls if you don't have your own towers shooting arrows into their unprotected backs.

Though they have no armor to speak of, they can last long on the walls on accord of their immense killing abilities: slaughtering several enemies every second means few losses in the long run.

Kardakâ Arteshtâr have performed very well for me when assaulting walls as the Hayasdan.

anything with the AP (or just a high enough attack/lethalit) atribute, and good armor. the former so that you cut down what's ahead of ye, the latter so you can survive the missles they might send your way.

I'd pick the ones others have pointed out, assuming if I can even find good cover for them. otherwise for hellenistic factions, I prefer pheraspids, or the thracian peltasts-especially the former.

Cost effective wise: taskestos, teceitos, bastarnae, thraikikoi peltastai, and sloxonez. High lethality, ap, and capable to murder everyone in short time. The ultimate one was gaesatae, i once had one half depleted unit of them eat halfstack of hastati and haploi on walls. If you are capable to got naked dudes with swords, you should definitely used em on walls.

I gotta say the best wall units I've ever had that were cost effective and deadly were the Southern Gallic Swordsmen. Those guys are cheap, plentiful and with their longswords go head to head with elite phalanxes on the walls. With three of these units, two Celtic spears, a unit of Lesser Celtic Nobles and two slingers I held Galatia against over twenty Seleucid full stacks of phalanxes, Thorakitai, and assorted units.
