If you want a console then i would suggest the PS3, it has the exclusive games that you want (GT5), and as someone who has considerable experience with both consoles i would also say the PS3. Because it doesn't have the reliability issues of the Xbox, online is free and the difference in quality for online is not that noticeable. And last but not least the PS3 is constantly being kept up to date by Sony when it comes to the likes of 3D compatability whereas Xbox has a habit of releasing a new console everytime they want to milk new trends and innovations (new console to use 3D and Natal).
Just my two cents.

Build wise, as a console, I imagine the PS3 is probably better. I do however have to disagree with the above poster. From my point of view, as someone who plays predominantly FPS and RPG games, The 360 exclusive games blow the PS3 out of the water. Gears of war, (the PS3 only has KIllzone, lol..), Left 4 dead, the Halo series and of course the brilliant Mass Effect series. I don't play racing games but from what I've heard, the Forza series is just as good as the Gran Turismo series.
The 360 also gets DLC earlier for many games such as map packs for FPS games and bonus episodes for games such as GTA. Live is also far superior to PSN if you plan on playing with others. That's my opinion though, it depends what sort of games your interested in really and you might actually find the PS3 exclusive games more to your liking.

I would reccomend Xbox 360. Halo( people saying its being milked are usually the ps3 fanboys that have never played it :P ), Gears, Mass Effect, Dragon age. I worked in my local GAME store for years and believe me, we saw just as many faulty ps3's come back as 360's.
You appear to be a big fan of racing sims, on 360 you have Forza, an excellent racing game that has the bonus of actually being out on the shelves to buy and play.
What can I say about online? Well the old saying "You get what you pay for" really rings true here. Also, I'm on there and I rock! :)
Control pads are far superior on the 360 and more ergonomic too.
New 360 hardware is whisper quiet and has wifi built in.
I do own a PS3 aswel but it just sits there gathering dust, perhaps I should take it for a walk and put it out of it's misery.

Hey i can reply to this!
I own both also and honestly i wouldn't buy either system just for one game. Both have their positives and drawbacks.
One nice thing about the PS3 is it has internet access which the 360 doesn't have besides that i tend to play the 360 more. One of the nice things about the 360 is you can load your games onto the harddrive to save wear and tear and heating on the system which is a must if you play for any extended period.
Also if you get a console, and this is more from personal preference, despite what the manuals say try to keep all the air intakes clear. Those suckers heatup quick so we placed ours up on wooden shims and it made a huge difference.
Also don't forget to connect the system you get online everyonce in a while,if you don't plan on having it constantly connected, for system and game updates.
Both have internet access, but if you mean wireless, then the 360 has that now too.
PS3 also allows you to install games, but if I'm not mistaken it is necessary which can be annoying if you are just borrowing a game to see if you like it. On 360 installation is only optional.

PS3 has a browser but it's absolute trash, crashes all the time, just doesn't respond, checking 'remember me' box is more like therapy because it won't. E-mails just don't open, in short it ' CHANGES THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT BROWSING THE INTERNET' Sony style.
Still recommend the PS3
