Thread: a confession.
Ibrahim 07:54 06-14-2010
I have a confession to make, a bit of a weird one:

I have a personal vendetta, but not the kind you'd expect: its not a guy or lady whose the object of it (Adam savage aside, but I'll get to that). its not over money, women, a slight against me by another person.

instead, its over a video game, which also happens to be the object of my vendetta: its called return to Jurassic, which was made in 1995 by Ednovation, for the PC. a puzzle game. I have a vendetta against a video game-why? well, I was at the second section of the game, and I was about to put the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle in, and the game just froze momentarily, and then its CD exploded, sending debris 40 ft or so away from the hard-drive, and till now forever denying me the satisfaction of playing it. its been 6 years since then, and I have been unable to finish the puzzle.

where does Adam Savage fit in? he's the one who called the exploding CD myth "busted". well, busted my aching ***

which brings me to the present: I've been looking for that game, starting with he company that made it (ednovation). unfortunately, the company is defunct-though for some odd reason, the website is still running. I tried to find it everywhere on line, and I found it: its in Australia, and I can't email them, because my Google AND my Hotmail servers do not recognize the format. on finding that out, I had a nervous breakdown, which has taken a while to recover from. as you might expect, I never found a second copy, and don't think there is any more out there. and yet, like a final fantasy addict who has to keep buying FF games no matter how bad they are, I am still looking. this obsession has my mom worried a bit-and my dad.

so I ask two questions:

1-am I crazy?
2-if so, do I need help?

I ask because my mom is somewhat worried about my obsession with that game.

that, and I figured this was the best place to unload about my darkest secret. (video game wise)

You arabs and your honour..

Whacker 08:54 06-14-2010
Is this an English language game? Because I can't find it anywhere on Mobygames. Google's only reference is ironically this thread that it's already cached.

Time to go Indiana Jones on them.

its not an honor issue-I just want to see what's at the end of that game; it has denied me that opportunity, so I've been on a quest to hun it down, and play it until I win

ok-the until we win part was a bit too much

it is..I think. I know my version was totally in english. its about this guy named Harold Peabody (I know, go with it), who is tasked with finding a missing time traveler who has this pot of a helmet that she uses to travel back in time. along the way, he has to take publicity pics, to save the area she was last seen in form being developed by this nasty contractor (the area being, apparently, Dinosaur provincial park, or at least the retarded inaccurate version of that place.). I got to the point where I'm in a cave on a cliff face in the park, and there is this puzzle (the one I mentioned), that I have to solve to get the codes for the helmet+the helmet itself (turns out the time traveler is dead-I think).

Have you tried writing a letter to Ednovation? That's what I'd do.

Reverend Joe 02:25 06-25-2010
You didn't throw the CD parts away, did you? That was supposed to be the second part of the puzzle -- rebuilding the CD perfectly. It was my favorite part of the game, personally.

Jolt 02:32 06-25-2010
Wait. You had a nervous breakdown because of a game? :O

I mean, the most I had, was getting seriously pissed off when I couldn't find a game I had, but from there to having a nervous breakdown, it goes a loong looong way. You probably need help though.

Mobygames lists it under the Ednovation entry, but doesn't provide a link or further info on it.

Google and Amazon both draw blanks on searches for this game. I think this one might be simply too obscure to find again.

yeah, I do need help. the thing is, I've never been this flabbergasted at a game before-not because of itself, but because this is the first time sth other than women have proved to be unconquerable/undoable/unlearnable. even calculus (eventually) gets done well by me. I don't believe in failure.

and no, don't take that part literally; I was ****** off, but didn't really suffer one. unless you define screaming like Spoony did when his inventory was stolen a "nervous breakdown".

also, I have been able to find another; unfortunately, its in Kuwait, and while my mom can get a hold of that person (the latter being a friend of mom's), she won't email her-not out of refusal, but forgetfulness. the person herself apparently offered to ship stuff over to mom that she needed for schooling, but my mom never got around to it either.

fraid I can't.

I got an answer: they no longer sell CD's; everything is online, and going there, there is no sign of the game

Fragony 07:47 08-08-2010
Try the underdogs, might have it, search function doesn't work for me.

http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/

If they have it for free it's legal don't worry

I found two mentions about the game with Google: This thread and a topic post from 2002 which says 'you should try Return to the Jurassic and Secrets of the Pyramids from Ednovia', this pyramid title led me to the National Library of Singapore here:
http://snb.nl.sg/holding/itemholding.aspx?bid=7399011
A description of the developer:
http://www.mobygames.com/company/ednovation/overview
And a description of Secrets of the Pyramids:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/win3x/...pyramids/links which was published by Mindscape in 1994.
Typing in 'Download Secrets of the Pyramid' I got to a site where you can download rare retro adventure games, but your game is just too obscure for that site.
Looking further for Secrets of the Pyramid turns up nothing and the publisher is a lame company which teaches todlers how to computer, I don't think you'll ever see that game again, it's just lost in time.

yeah, I'm aware of those; I've pretty much resigned myself to not playing it again.

at least I found Turok: dinosaur hunter

Fragony 08:25 08-10-2010
Two recommendations for a dinosaur freak such as yourself,

Tresspasser. It's broken. But criminally underrated.
Carnivores. You get to hunt Dinosaurs. Sometimes they hunt you.

A great game, I remember playing for days to get to the sniper rifle to shoot some T-Rex.

How could you do such thing to creature that magnificent. Use the bow.

Great game indeed, was stalking a whatsitcalled, he was on to me and I couldn't get a shot. When I finally was close enough it was snatched by a raptor. Then I was they sneak up on you. Amazing ecosystem and AI for such an old game, a predator is a rare sight but these encounters are memorable.

if you watn trespassers, I still have a copy (no idea why, I never got past the first couple levels...) I'd be willing to send to you/upload for you.

and yes, Carnivores was epic. if only they made a remake, with farther LOS and better graphics. one can only dream...

Fragony 09:37 08-12-2010
I would keep the copy, it's a collectors item people pay good money for. It's widely regarded as one of the biggest disasters in gaming history, but It still has a small but absolutely rabid fan community.

Carnivores II exists, but it's more of an expansion. No better graphics, just more dinosaurs, maps and weapons.

Trespasser? I wouldn't call it a disaster. Definitely some major glitches, but I've heard tell that a modding community exists, and has fixed +improved the game. gotta try it out some time.

You obviously didn't play mass effect 3 at the time. Or Never winter nights 2. Or KOTOR 2.
