    Default Question for archaeologists

In my area they are building a new freeway interchange, and right next to the freeway close to where the new interchange is going to be there is a hill with a bill board on the top. I remember hearing a long time ago that you could find fragments of Indian pottery on the hill, and then a couple weeks ago I was driving past the hill and I noticed that there was an archaeological dig taking place on the hill. So one night I went up there to check it out. Apparently the site used to be an Anasazi village, and some remains of buildings had been excavated. Unfortunately it was night time and I couldn't see very much, so yesterday I went up to see what else had been uncovered and take some pictures. But to my disappointment everything had been buried with a mini loader, including the buildings. So what happens to a site like this once it has been excavated? Are the ruins re-buried, destroyed, or moved to another location?

Not that I am an archaeologist (did 1 basic archaeology subject at uni), but it seems like they've covered the ruins as they have either finished the dig permanently, or for the season. Normally ruins which aren't important are reburied to preserve them.

Is the site going to be built on? IIRC when they are going to build over an archaeological site they often send a team to find out what they can before the site gets concreted over or destroyed. If the finds are spectacular they may be saved.

Ok I see. At first I thought the site was going to be destroyed because the excavation started at the same time as the construction, but when I checked the maps published by the state department of transportation it didn't look like the site was going to be built over so I'm not sure anymore I guess we'll see
