Actually you don't have to autoresolve battles - the alternative is that attacker, whose turn it is, fights them against the AI.

Of course the AI is not nearly as careful with your troops as you would be, so this creates particular campaign map strategies which, in my opinion, make hotseat strategy very different from normal SP gaming. For example you need to plan your invasions carefully so as to achieve your goals quickly without leaving your invading armies vulnerable to reprisal attacks by the defender.

Spies, forts and siege equipment become very important.

Neither option (autoresolve or fighting battles against the AI) is perfect and there are usually games with each ruleset going on at the same time in the Throne Room - stop by and check them out!
