Wink How do you defend with these units?

So I was playing the Peninsular campaign as the British and I found my settlement at Coimbra beseiged by an army of Marechal Massena. Here are the details

    My Army:
    5 Armed Citizenry
    1 Foot
    2 Light Foot

    Massena's Army:
    5 Fusiliers of the Line
    2 Dragoons
    1 Chausseurs a Cheval
    1 6-lber Cannon
    1 General's Bodyguard(Massena)

By some kind of miracle(or I was just too cunning), I was able to rout the entire army and even kill Massena. How would you have done it?
    a totally innocent sig...

I had one a bit like that.

I had two militia and a light foot. I may have had more armed citizenry though.

I was lucky enough to get an area next to the town with a walled off area. I had entrenchments too.

The light food did most of the work running back and forth in the area to take care of the next threat.

I had one armed citizenry rout but they came back and I put them in a building helping out the militia that doubled as my general.

Once they exhausted them selves in the attack I just moved out to take on the cannon. It just routed away.
