    Default KH decisions/strat?

Hi all, Im actually quite new to EB (just got it to run on my mac, best mod ever btw) and ive been playing as KH. Ive managed to take Korinthos, Chalkis, Myteline, Thermon and Demetrias, so far, a decent start. However money is still an issue, i have a historically-traditional hoplite w/supporting infantry army moving towards Pella, but have a full stack of Makedonian and Epiriot armys waiting it seems for me to exit the mountain pass.

All in all, i managed to break out of Pelopponesos and into the mainland, but im stalled. my first question would probably be what is the best style of army in peoples opinion for KH to use? (hoplitai? phalanxes? mercs?). The finance system in EB is probably the hardest transition .any help on the best provinces to go for (such as kydonia) to get income up, as well as buildings would be really helpful. i think i have the army makeup id want to go for, but itd take years to train..if ever..on my current finances levels (only managing to keep around 1k per season =/)

ps. im at war with Epiros, Makedonia, and Rome (Massilia defected to me, lost after a few seiges)

    Welcome

KH is a great faction. You have some of the best infantrymen there are. Your armies should rely on this heavy infanty, with support of cavalry (hammer-anvil tactic...). Alternatives would be mercenaries, but they are quite expensive. You seem to have quite a good start. Greece is quite rich. Build up your economy and raise high taxes if you must. Send a diplomat to everywhere and get trade rights with the AI-Factions. To expand, there are several possibilities for you, since you are quite in the middle of the map. Mikra Asia is extremely rich, it has many mines. But you will have to fight the Seleukids and/or Ptolemaioi, who will field vast armies of makedonian-style Phalangitai. You also could the other direction, and conquer Italy. Italy is very rich too and you will have to fight another faction, whose armies rely on heavy Inf - the Romans.

BTW, for your finances: If always keep the tax-level on "low taxes" until the city has reached 6000 inhabitants, and then raise them. The city will grow faster, and from that point on you get 1. more taxes and 2. can train armies without emptying the city fastly.

well for the moment im trying to figure out what would be the most cost-efficient unit to recruit, and still be able to take on makedonian phalangetai. would it be in my better interest to play it defensivly and slow and keep building my economy, or keep pushing into northern greece, to prevent the other factions from gaining too many higher quality troops?

Well, for the fun of it, when i play KH (pretty rarely as I'm a dedicated fan of Sweboz) I try to use only classical style army, maynot it's not very historical for the time period of EB, but I do believe they are much more fun to play...
Opinions are like bacteries : we all have, but it's better to keep them for ourself... (By me!)

I'd suggest you to deal with Makedonia first, you will gain Pella and its mines.
Then keep in check Epeiros until you'll be able to recruit a decent army (Hoplitai and Peltastai or Akontistai).
Once you control all of Hellas you will have only the norther border to hold, while you can assemble a little navy and expand where you prefer...

    1. Take pella ..it has the best mines in the whole game
    2. hoplitai haploi are very good , cheap battle holders
3 Sphendonetai are cheap and good
4 thrakioi peltastai mercs can be your flank killers (prob best in the whole game as infantry)
5 Dismiss the navy except 1 boat for transport
6 try to fight in advantageous points such as river crossings and mountains when defending

PS : greece is financially very easy to maintain and grow , so i think there are some probs in what units you take or what you do when conquering cities. Try Saka or Sweboz if you want an "interesting" financial problem

Economy is key with KH. And I prefer to keep my citizens as tax-paying civilians, rather than recruit them into my armies.

So I try to recruit as little as possible, and hire mercenaries instead. Yes, they're expensive - but they have the advantage of not reducing your town population. Which, since I play on huge unit size, is very helpful.

if you wise, just spam hoplitai haploi, sphendenotai, and some akontistai, built a fullstack army, and go, besiege Pella... Phalangites will took heavy loss when they sally because they must move out slowly from gates, and you could exploit that moment by bombarding them with stones and javelins, let the haploi take the surivors

It really depends on how you want to play.

From a gameplay point of view your best strategy would be to eradicate Epeiros and Makedonia and conquer a bunch of thraikian provinces.
Thus 1)you will have eliminated your two closest enemies
2)you will have a secure empire (only threatened from the north or from whoever controls Bithynia, seeing that naval invasions even with bi.exe or Alex.exe are unlikely to be a problem)
3)you will get filthy rich with all that sea trade and the mines in Makedonia, Illyria hellenike and the thraikian provinces.
From there you can pretty much do whatever you like. Just do not attack the Romani until you get the March of Time reform, or you'll never be able to train your own factional Phalangitai.

Nevertheless, since I like to role-play, I am not so aggressive because the game becomes too easy too fast and because it would be totally ahistorical for the Koinon Hellenon to become a Balkan Empire in a few years. In my last KH game, I halted my expansion after I had taken Demetrias (and transformed them into a client kingdom - it just didn't feel right to incorporate them right away into the Alliance as equal members, cause they were closer to the Makedonian political system rather than the city-state system of the southerners). The reason I didn't expand north was that I wanted to face those Argyraspides and Hetairoi in battle, rather than Akontistai and Phalangitai Deuteroi, also it would feel awkward for an alliance of the greek cities to occupy Makedonia (such a kingdom could not be occupied with sheer force forever, the Diadochoi might unite against the occupation of the "Motherland" and the political institutions of the two sides were too different for a unification process to take place) and finally because the KH was essentially a defensive alliance: if the aggressor was nullified, the alliance would break apart, although you could role-play that too. I therefore used forced diplomacy to simulate a peace with the Antigonids and I orchestrated a war between Epeiros and Makedonia with me keeping balance between them with occasional interventions. In the meanwhile I built up my economy and my infrastructure.

Form there, I expanded slowly with naval invasions mainly in the greek colonies around the Mediterranean, justifying my expeditions as a way to protect my trade routes (thus I took Byzantion and the Krimaian cities to ensure the grain provisions of my mainland) or as a mission to liberate my enslaved greek brothers (eastern Sicily and Magna Graecia). Note that the offshore cities did not have full voting rights in the ruling council of the Alliance, they paid more taxes, but they were not required to sent soldiers abroad to protect the interests of KH unless they themselves were threatened. Moreover no barbarian nations were allowed in the Alliance, unless as client kingdoms (the Greeks had quite a few problems with incorporating foreign elements ). In the end I simulated a conquest of Mikra Asia, where aside form the greek colonies on the shores the rest of the lands (inhabited by non-Greeks) were administered in the manner of roman provinces by governors appointed by the Council. Oh, and I also reformed my army turning them into a professional heavy infantry force and allowing greater use of mercenaries and I introduced a copy of the Roman Auxilia (aka the "Epikouroi") drafted from non Greeks leaving within the KH provinces and serving as light infantry.

Well, sorry if I wrote too much and if most of that isn't really anything original, I just wanted to show that it is way funnier to roleplay than to play as efficiently as possible. I would talk more about my early and later army composition, but others have made some very good points. Just a minor advice: what Burebista said about the Thraikian Peltastai is true. Those guys are lethal.

Thanks alot everyone! Ive been experimenting around and think ive got the idea of EB and how to play it (upkeep and such). I recently tried a campaign as the Romani and while expansion in italy went fairly quick, i just cant seem to transition well from controlling hoplite-based armies to legions =P.

Ive started a new KH game and am going to take it slow building my economy and using more hoplitai haploi, theyre much more effective than i thought (used to militia hoplites in vanilla hehe)
