Shogun was almost identical, graphics aside :)

Thanks for the links Swoosh So. Those bring memories of games long gone, when graphics still looked more like lego bricks piled together!

I always thought (because of the similarities) that the predecessor of Shogun was Castles II: Siege and Conquest

To me that was a slam-dunk, but it may have just been a coincidence

Shogun Total War is the only Total war I've haven't played (Kind of ironic since the late Sengoku period is my favorite in Japanese history), so Shogun 2 Total War shall be a interesting expierence for me.
It is possible to be too much smarter than your opponent. If you give credit for more subtlety than he has, he can achieve tactical surprise by doing the obvious.

Mike states here that he kinda copied lords of the rising sun and a game called waterloo he had worked on

That version of Waterloo really shows the evolution process continued past any possible Castles era influence, and when combined with Lords of the Rising Sun, would definitely provide the parents of Shogun

I'd always kind of assumed that the shogun developers had worked on Warhammer: Dark Omen prior to S:TW. I have no actual evidence for this, other than some striking similarities in the nature of the real time battles.

When I played Dark Omen, it was just short of being a great game. Dark Omen + TBS campaign map = sublime Total War!

Same here. The original STW and MTW battles really feel like Dark Omen ones. I've always thought the two series were somehow related.

Centurion: Defender of Rome was very TW-esque. Strat map, real time battles, naval conflict somewhat like NTW and ETW (though small scale and primative, game being circa 1990 or so). I had some fun with it, even had a bit of diplomacy when interacting with a province you were about to invade.

I have to say I loved Warhammer Dark Omen, Shogun was like a dream come true after playing that for hours on end.

:) i think the gameplay would be abit old now, would have thought the guy would have lended his obviously considerable ablity to something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OUsnFrJ3FI
Looks like 1 million factions in that mod, hope he added those cheezy sound effects just to the video tho imagine having to put up with that in game :o
Those skeletons look so much like the ones in the old movies that it almost makes me want a fantasy totalwar :) which i think would be huge but hack off most of the fanbase. Always wondered why some games companies that actually can make good games dont buy big licences its like seeing 2 people u know should really get together but they never do :o

I honestly can't fathom why CA havent done this, or at the very least farmed the project out to a sub-studio or somesuch while they carry on making 'serious' games. They would seriously clean up.

And while i'm thrilled to see shogun make a comeback, i am a bit worried about this tendency to revisit the same game again and again - i'll be really pissed off if the next game in the series is Rome 2.

I wouldent mind seeing a fantasy totalwar but i also want to see a "rome done right" rome2, i just love the era and the diversity of factions. Was so dissapointed with rome1 with its iceskating ultra fast units.

Not to mention the anachronistic overpowered cavalry.

From my vantage point, there's something charming about the snow-topped palisades of Dinefwr. In spite of the fact that I envision its greatness is to some degree lost on the seven hundred depleted Welshmen I've quite recently requested to rupture the fortification's dividers, with only battered wooden shields amongst them and a run of the mill British conjecture of blazing bolts. I'd jump at the chance to imagine their penances come at the dramatic finish of a since quite a while ago, fizzled conciliatory battle. Honestly however, similar to such an extensive amount the contention ever, they had something sparkling, and I chose I needed it.
