Some of my players have asked me these similar questions, and although I feel I usually give them a pretty in-depth response, it is always from just my perspective, so I'd like to hear yours. If you have strategies you'd like to keep to yourself, that's easy enough.

You can try to find mafia, but it's also powerful to be able to bring in a large list of innocents later in the game. So it's worthwhile to consider investigating people who aren't likely to die. Investigating the town's top suspects may not be great, because if you get an innocent result it can be tough to derail the wagon without revealing yourself, and if you get a guilty they were often going to be lynched anyway. Going after players who will be influencing the town in a big way is a good strategy too, hate to say.

Instead of trying to guess the mafia kills, I would either try and protect a player who seems like a pro town role, or protect someone I think will do good pro town work.

Block whoever you think is scum.

Vig whoever you think is scum. Unlike cop, vigging the towns top suspect can be great.

To prevent your lynch.

Acting in the way that scum often do and town seldom do. Memory and pattern recognition are key.

Capo II I think. Or else godfather one, but that was a bit of a cakewalk.

Tell the truth, usually. Most of my actions in games, be it whether I'm town or otherwise, have a logical pattern to them. I simply invoke that logic. Barring that, I sometimes flat-out ignore the criticism. 50% of the time it won't be pressed.

How do you reverse a bandwagon successfully?

Sheer volume. Can't tell you how many times that's saved me in the past.

How do you accuse people successfully?

Fake PMs/results Either that or tell the town that I'm not going to tell them how I know X is guilty, just that he is. You guys are so easy to manipulate.

Yes.

Is there a way to not get lynched early, often?

Seems to me like luck of the draw/randomness more than anything else. I've generally avoided it, but then again I don't get lynched very often at all.

What are some strategies for playing a detective?

Pay attention in the thread. Look for little cues that other people might miss. Conduct investigations independently unless something obviously big needs resolving.

What are some strategies for playing a doctor?

Lay low until a power role shows up.

What are some strategies for playing a roleblocker?

Make note of the amount of night actions that take place for the different targets you block. Most of the time you won't be the only factor, but added together the information could help you nail mafia every time.

Have fun, your role rules.

When should you roleclaim, and why?

When the town can achieve maximum results from your claim. If you have one scum and you don't think you can get any more, claim. If you don't have any but have a decent list of innocents and think you're going to die the next night, claim.

What Sasaki said pretty much. It's like that one dude's definition of obscenity: you know it when you see it.

Kill townies.

As Mafia:
In terms of sheer overpowering victory-ness, definitely Godfather 1. In terms of pulling out a close call, probably Graffiti Mafia (says something that my most successful games were in 2006/early 2007 )
As town: Probably Scourge of Ephesus. I know we lost that one, but there ended up being something like 5 scum and I remember having a big hand in getting 3 or 4 of them lynched.
Too many close calls that went the other way that I'd like to remember as well. Bridge Zhou Far is up there, but Godfather 2 still takes the cake.

Try to be active, nail a few mafia, and avoid saying things that make you seem nervous.

Fire back a good argument, but not one that makes it seem like you're overreacting.

Back up your post with evidence, be it real or manufactured.

If you could influence them specifically, that would mean that you would just expose them and win the game.

Nope. First-day is usally random wagons.

This one worked out great- it was mini-NotW V or VI Everyone Wants to Change the World. I nailed you because of scumminess. Then I scanned Nictel because he was voting with you. Then, I aquired a huge army of innocents and it was easy taking down the other mafia group. Of course, this was flawed, mainly because I could have just been mafia pretending to be a cop.

I've never been a doctor- I don't know...

Avoiding to be killed is the priority. You can reveal when your about to be lynched.

Pretend your mafia. Think of someone who you would kill. Act like a mafia too.

Don't do anything, until someone really scummy comes out. Otherwise, you might block town effort too.

Don't use your ability unless your sure.

When you are about to be lynched to plead your innocence. Unless if your detective and feels that you have something to tell.

  Most successful... town wins, I don't count as I only helped in one terribly unbalanced game. This game, I wasn't that close to winning, but I felt I was. Other games I may have come closer, but I knew I couldn't win.
  
  Fimbulwinter, by our own Omanes. I was the "Psychopathic and Cannibalistic Rune Carver". I managed to get the town lynching who I wanted through the runes I could carve, while killing off the likely mafia at night. I had painted myself as a pro-town vigilante, but the mafia found me, the night after I nearly killed one of them.

How do you not look suspicious successfully?

Be active, take part in discussions, and "hide in the crowd". A thing that is important to remember is that not accusing your scumbuddies when there's evidence against them marks you as the next target (you can sometimes get away with accusing them when there's no reason to, thus distancing yourself from them, but it can backfire since it's seldom better than no connection at all. If you have to, make sure it doesn't come off as a "Look I am accusing this guy"-demonstration. Then everyone can figure it out).

How do you respond to criticism successfully?

As has been said; Keep to short answers. Don't overreact if it blows your cover (ie. if you're claiming basic townie and not a crucial role), and try to address accusations in private, although you have to be careful about what you're saying - especially some of the more experienced players will put you under pressure and poke at you for strange answers. KEEP COOL - taking a couple of seconds extra to answer is excusable, a slip is not.
To use a personal example, I think my conversations with ATPG in Cdf's "Swords and D20s" where I was mafia helped convince him (at least for a time) that I should survive, because I made no blunders in private discussions, did my best to assess a difficult situation (4 claimed powerroles out of 7 players, where I was one =/ ) and didn't have anything against following ATPG's vote no matter who it was on (everyone knew there were two mafia).

How do you reverse a bandwagon successfully?

Starting a counterbandwagon, often if the original lynchee claims a pro-town powerrole. Sometimes, giving up your own life as a basic townie to create a fast wagon can be worth it.

How do you accuse people successfully?

Ugh, there are lots of answers to this one. You have to have town credit, be it for your own non-scummines in just that game, reputation and experience in general, or do it in a way that would not profitable as mafia (bet your own life that X is guilty when there are plenty of players left). Backing your accusation up with in-game evidence doesn't become reliable until lategame, unless the accused person has made a slip in conversation or is behaving way out of line.
Sigurd's "Rise of the Sith" has some pretty impressive analytic work by several players, if you need examples.

Behaving in a way that risks getting yourself lynched is often good, but you can never be sure. Some mafia target inactives while others try to sweep the ranks of actives clear. Some kill off the players that seem to "hide" and stay low, others target the more verbose players to cripple town effort (this arguably works better in games where death means no talking). In general, though, being active goes a long way, at least early game. Nobody actively wants to ruin your game, and the first day targets, before serious leads, are often random or just the players who have not showed up.

Be active, take part in official and private discussions, actively pursue your own leads as well as helping the town pressure scummy players.

What are some strategies for playing a detective?

Most detectives try to stay in the background as to not draw the mafia's attention. While that is one tactic, it does not always achieve this purpose and often leads to town suspicion, to the point where clearing your name means roleclaiming, which means death in most cases. Therefore, another solid tactic is to try and blend in with the original town, though without taking the lead in bandwagoning or accusations. Simply blending in minimizes your chance of standing out.

What are some strategies for playing a doctor?

Pick a player you know from beforehand who you think plays well as town, and protect him every round. It should be someone you can read relatively well so that you can tell after some days if it's worth keeping the protection on him. Obviously, if a pro-town is forced to claim, protect him.

Uhh... I'm actually not good at that, I think. I'd only block people I suspect quite a bit, so possibly not until the third or fourth night. That also allows some time to experience the "unaffected" kill rythm of the game (2 evey night, or what else) which makes it easier to tell whether you actually block a killer.

I have a very activist look on that role - I often deem it worthwhile to rid the town of lurkers/top suspects/disruptive elements even without a clear evidence to their guilt. Taking this approach grants you a much larger responsibility, since you can do serious damage to both town and mafia sides.

When it helps the town. This often means when you look like you could be lynched, but can also be earlier if you've caught scum in an investigation or can somehow forge a critical alliance of confirmed townies by revealing.

That's a case-by-case decision, but one of the best way to expose scum is to pressure them. Even if they don't bend to the pressure, they are more likely to make mistakes in conversation and may slip up something that reveals a Perfect Information Syndrome. When accusing someone, it is important to appear aggressive, but remain calm yourself, that you may correctly identify flaws or parts left over by the accused. Try to bring the discussion to those subjects.
Save conversations and read through them / the thread when you're calm and has the game at a distance. Forget any personal preferences or prejudices and analyze the content of what someone says.

What do you do when you're mafia?

Do your best to mask any system in the killings, to avoid leads towards your own person. This also helps your odds of attacking a non-protected person. Vary between active and lurking players, and make sure not to be the only active or lurking player left - people will begin to wonder why you haven't died. In public, decide on a coverrole (probably basic townsperson) and stick with it. Inconsistency is one of the most dangerous perils and you better have a good explanation if you're caught in it, because most townies have no reason to lie to the public. Do not change your normal behaviour noticably; if you usually chat a lot with your friends about the game, a sudden silence is not just "no defense", it may very well be used as an argument against you. The same goes for thread activity and behaviour.
A personal example would be Andres' "Daggers in the Night", where I replaced the Godfather figure some days into the game. Several players I have known for years (Renata and Niklas, at least) and who I have a hard time bluffing were still alive, and I knew they would be dangerous later. I bid myself patience and waited a couple of days before killing Niklas, and Renata almost lived to the end of the game. Had I killed these the first night after entering as a replacement, it would be evidence against me. That game in general is an example of an (in my opinion) very effective and disruptive kill rythm/selection, both before and after I joined. Another kill I was proud of in that game was TinCow, whom I deem one of the best players on this forum. He had caught some attention and the town suspected him a bit one day. I decided that meant that he would not be protected at night, and that killing him would succeed and perhaps even mystify the town. I knew he was not guilty and could be a strong player to be caught against in the final episode of the game, so I decided it was the right time to dispatch him, which went smoothly.

What was your most successful game, and why? (As town, and as mafia, if applicable)
My most succesful game as mafia, in my opinion, was Andres' "Daggers In The Night", where I replaced johnhughthom as the Godfather figure. I have given several examples of what I thought worked well above, but a fair sccop of luck when it came to Kagemusha surviving lynches and the town's misunderstanding that he was therefore the godfather and unlynchable, helped. I took over a role that had been inactive and was not really suspected, and didn't do anything to bring attention to myself. The only time I was accused (Sasaki, another top player in my book), I was about to flinch and reply, but decided that it would stick out and let the lone accusation die in silence.
I have a hard time thinking of a game where I have been innocent. I am almost Atheotes II around here... Nope, Sigurd's "Rise Of The Sith". I made some mistakes and may have roleclaimed too early, but... Yeah, well, I was better than in YLC's "That Creeping Darkness", which is the only other game I can remember as innocent.

I play no differently then I would if I were town. Observe the game objectively, disregarding the actions of myself and my respective partners, and using the remaining evidence to build a case of who could be mafia. Pretending or assuming there are other mafia members unknown to you that you have to try to find helps this approach.

Most successful was also the quickest. Can't recall the name of the game or the host but I was a joker and got lynched on Day 1 just because of my quirky behavior. Everyone thought old skooma deserved to be the first one out. Think it was lift escape by beefy. I pretty much ruined that game. (sorry beefy) Awesome premise though and I think he should try it again. There was something like 10 townies and 1 joker/mafia. Everyone was trapped in an elevator and voted to see who got rescued every day. The objective was to lynch all townies and not to lynch the mafia/joker. I was the first rescued and consequently, the rest of the town was trapped forever I'm assuming. Probably still there right now at the bottom of the elevator shaft in a wreckage of twisted metal and gore...

Almost every one of these questions should be started with "depends on the situation" so though I'll put some general thoughts, they are at best weak generalizations.

Really depends a lot. Lurking works pretty well as long as if you're called out for it you, just respond to it and show up for a couple of rounds in a light way.

How do you respond to criticism successfully?

Probably one of the most dependent. Sometimes it involves a full, lengthy, and detailed refutation of the accusation. Sometimes it involves a short reply. Sometimes it involves completely ignoring it. Sometimes it involves distracting from yourself in various ways.

How do you reverse a bandwagon successfully?

Very dependent. Sometimes you just wait it out and keep your mouth shut. Sometimes you defend yourself incessantly. Sometimes you distract.

How do you accuse people successfully?

Persistence usually works. If you're in every page of the thread in a big way continually harassing the person then they will always be in peoples minds. Claiming detective will get the person lynched a lot.

One of the most straightforward ones - be suspicious, be lynchbait.

Is there a way to not get lynched early, often?

Lurking will usually get you out of getting lynched very early unless the town decides to persecute lurkers early which happens occasionally.

Investigate people you already have a strong feeling about and want to make sure to prepare for a reveal or investigate people you have no idea about, especially those you don't get a read on well or those you haven't played with much.

Only was a doctor once I think and I just protected the guy who I thought was the detective non-stop... Thankfully he WAS the detective.

Err on the side of caution!!! Four Horsemen were a fluke.

Very dependent on situation. General advice is right before you feel you are going to get killed. Specifically for detectives, if you have ID'd someone, it's usually a good play to reveal, especially if it's Mafia. Also, if you've got a long list of innocents, and the numbers are dwindling, it's usually a good play to reveal, especially to save an innocent who is going to be lynched.

Vague predicate that is pretty meaningless as is in a public sense and shouldn't be formalized/defined or it completely loses whatever little value it has.

What do you do when you're mafia?

If you do not know what you are doing then other people will sure as heck not know what you are doing.

Mafia V (GH), Midgard Saga (Sigurd), and Whispers of the Night (YLC). Very fun games and I got to try a lot of new things in all of them. As town, particularly memorable were Graffiti Mafia and Fillet Royale because of the new gameplay styles I was able to try in both.

my best game as mafia was most likely beskars game which took place in some anime series. i underwent the most extensive idiot routine i have ever seen.

worst game as a townie also occured in a beskar game...... i sidled to my doom in that one

I'm ususally not mafia, so I just keep doing what I normally do (not very much/ screw over the town royally) and people seem to let me by

No one really criticises me about anything, if I screw something up they just either type angrily at me or don't. I try my best if I do receive criticism however.

I don't, or I do something somehow suspicious, voting pro/con bandwaggon, and get it changed on me. Unless I present obviously compelling evidence.

If I'm seriously doing it I'll usually organize my argument in a chronological order of what happened so to keep a flow. I'm not sure if I do this every time, but I like to do it.

My playing style as of late has become more lurker than I'd like it to be, as an obvious consequence of that, I'm being killed less early on, and saved for the endgame.

Don't back down from challenges, if someone throws a vote at you don't assume it's because they're first round random voting either.

Have a keen eye, and try not to confuse mafia scummy for power role scummy

If you are ever in fear of your life, immediately, and beforehand to anyone you trust in private.
