Which is exactly why a two party system is bad.

America - Greatest democracy in the world. At least we don't have this problem in the UK.

What's the challenge based on? Did they mess up or falsify the petition signatures or something?

Whatever the reason this is a travesty of democracy. I hope that these third party candidates are not disqualified. I hate both our main political parties and would hate even more not having the option to choose someone I feel more qualified just because he/she didn't choose to go with an 'allowed' party!

Four stage strategy from Yes, Minister:
Stage one we say nothing is going to happen.
Stage two, we say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it.
Stage three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do.
Stage four, we say maybe there was something we could have done, but it's too late now.

Well they have write in candidates don't they? But you can't list everyone on the ballot who asks to be listed. How long would the ballot be? So they require a certain number of signatures. If these guys didn't get the required number (which I guess is the issue?) then they shouldn't be put on the ballot. Anyone who supports them can write the name in.

How many signatures do you need? It seems ridiculous to claim the candidates are incapable of obtaining a few dozen signatures and take them all to court over it.

It depends, it's in the 1000's usually I think, and very often the people who get them are sleezy. Basically they hire people off the street and pay them by signature sheet so often there is falsification involved.

If they can't get the signatures then obviously they won't be elected...
