Well, before the Portuguese, Sir Drake found Indonesia accidentally in some point of his life and actually made a good relationship there with the locals. So, probably, an English presence in maluku is possible. BUT, Drake didn't made a permanent base there, only leaving the trust of the Malukuans. Maybe put it in a rebel faction? Until it automaticly changes until the British came?

but you said that Drake didn't made a permanent base there (in maluku), why it should change (maybe, not rebel faction anymore) when the british came?

During the reign of Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah of Melaka (1477-1488), force from Kastilan (Castile of Spain) defeated the Kingdom of Maluku, and King of Maluku requested aid from Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah. It was stated in the Malay text of Sejarah Melayu.

yeah, eastern islands differs quite a lot from western islands, for a starter, while armour is common to be used in Jawa, Sumatera, and Malaysia... Bugis and Maluku troops severely lack them, because there is no major iron mine in that area (on medieval age)

Many historical record stated that European intervention in South East Asia started at 16th century, as Portuguesa arrived in Malacca, and Spanish in Philippines in early 1500~. But Sejarah Melayu stated that it was earlier, in 15th century, as Kastilan forces invaded Maluku. Do you guys have more info?

missionary from spain and portuguese did comes far earlier... and indeed, muslim accounts tend to tell them as "invasion" because they generally cause unrests among nobles and spark rebellion from Christianized princes and nobles....
