See the thing with these kind of “less state” alternatives is that anyone not obsessed with less state can see that in a way those security contractors will become too competent in providing security for the one who pays, but rather less competent in avoiding harming others. It's the same with PMC's: they aren't held publicly accountable so they just don't care as long as they get their job done. That kind of thing comes full circle.

Or in other words, in a way a similar social experiment was done on Sicily in the mid 19th century and to a large extent is being done in the USA right now. It's just not the police or society at large that is doing it, it is the criminals who do it. Instead of being just a criminal relying on a basic security provided by the society that they live in, they feel the need to employ the services of a group of other criminals who will provide them with far more personal security than they could otherwise attain. Now, of course those criminals rather say that they join a family, a brotherhood or a gang or whatever they call it; but they're not doing that for the weekly variety show or Christmas dinner...
