Default Lock On: Modern Air Combat

    Does anyone have this game?
I had a few bucks in my paypal account that was just lying around, and I saw this combat flight sim for $1.50 on ebay so I bought it. Wondering if it is worth the $4.00 (including shipping) that I bought it for. I read a few reviews and they said it was really realistic and hard, but a great sim.
It should arrive in a few days so Ill post a review then.

The reviews that I've read seem rather disparaging.

Although, I haven't personally played it, so I can't really say much about it. On a slightly related noted, I think I might purchase HAWX... though it's published by ubisoft and seems extremely arcade-y and suited more for MP than it is for single player. Flight sims of any sort seem to be a dying breed these days.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    well, quality flight sims anyway!

I don't know if this is true. Sure they are rare, but there still are some good ones out there. IL-2 was excellent, and quite realistic. I bought Rise of Flight (WWI) but haven't gotten into it much because it is too realistic. I turned it as arcadey as possible and still find it difficult. Though my joystick is somewhat crappy! The makers of IL-2 are working on a Battle of Britian flight sim that I plan to look into when it is closer to release (though they have been working on it for a long time!). Flight sims aren't dying, they just have a very specific fan base, hence their being so rare. I have always enjoyed them and still do. I just like antique planes vs. jets and stuff. Perhaps I am wrong, but I would be sad if they stopped making them. Such a nice addition to generally PC only titles. Well, the good titles anyway.

I think it comes with StarForce, I have a copy myself, also tried it (before learning about SF), had some graphics errors, parts of it seemed a bit unfinished and I couldn't figure certain things out, others seemed to like ti though.

There also seems to be a really huge die-hard fanbase. Well, my copy comes in the mail tomorrow, I borrowed a joystick from a friend, will report back.

Well Ive played a few hours of the game and I think its great. Its really hard, but a great game. I love the realism (such as the 17 step process it takes to just taxi to the runway and take off). Though I am nowhere near combat rediness, I have succeeded in taking off and doing basic meneuvers, such as a barrel roll.
It will take a while for me to get to combat rediness, but when I do itll be worth it. Raz, those reviews werent worth a damn.

On a side note, there is something very relaxing about just cruising at 5000 feet, doing nothing but looking around and admiring the view.

Bahahaha, you really make me want to try this game out. Unfortunately, I don't have a joystick or any compatible, nor comparable equivalent. Tell me, is it decent to play without a joystick (if at all possible)?

Yes, by all means you need a joystick. I think you probably can play it without, but a joystick makes it sooooo much easier. I havent tried it without, joysticks are much more fun to use than any mouse+keyboard!
By the way, I have the logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick, its amazing.

I know that I'm double posting, but I just had to post this here. I was in my first ever true dogfight. I was in a German Mig-29A (known as the Fulcrum) against a Russian Mig-27K and a Mig-31. I saw the Mig-31 first, but he was really high up. I must have been so intent on climbing that I lost sight of the Mig-27. I was at about 10,000 meters when I passed this huge cloud. Just then, warning lights went off and I looked behind me: the Mig-37 was on my six and about to fire a missile at me! He must have been in the clouds waiting for me. I dropped flares and rolled out, then swung out to my left to go against him. I saw that the Mig-31 was still at around 21000m so I didn't worry about him yet.
The Mig-27 and I circled for a bit before I barrel rolled (no joke) while pulling back on the throttle, breaking the circle and in a bit I was on his six, but at least 15 kilometers away from him. He was too far away for a missile lock so I fired my cannon at him a few times but because of the distance, my shots missed. I put the throttle to the max, but he dove and I overshot him. He was again at my six and was firing his cannon, so I performed the Immelman Maneuver and got away. We both circled back and headed towards each other and that when I finally got a missile lock on him. I closed the distance, got a solid lock, and fired. I hit him, and got my first kill in a dogfight. I swung around and got a few pics, one of which I'm showing here.
I then looked for the Mig-31. He was still way up there so I pulled back on the throttle and headed up there. But then I hit my service ceiling, which was 18000m. The ceiling of the Mig-31 is 21000m, which was where he was. And he wasn’t going to any range where I could engage him. I tailed him from 18km away (he was too fast for my Fulcrum to close the range) for about ten minutes until I gave up and exited the match. Though I didn't take down the Mig-31, I still had shot down my first fighter jet and was feeling very proud of myself.

You aren't a true man until you have one of these: http://www.thrustmaster.com/product.aspx?ProductID=11

Best $250 I ever spent on a joystick setup.

I really hope for your sanity's sake that you do NOT have Flaming Cliffs installed, and just the original LOMAC.

That joystick is way too expensive for me.

But why should I not get FC1? As of now I only have the original LOMAC installed.

Because of what he said in the other topic.
