I was playing someone the other day and some thing odd happened even before a shot had been fired.

I moved my units after setup in reaction to the positioning of my opponents men. Within about a minute of this happening, a yari samurai unit with an honour of two and a fatigue rating of fresh, decided it to rout!

There were no enemy units anywhere near it and my own army was deloyed closely, nor was it under fire.

Does anyone have a clue why this happened, was it just bad luck?

    The rout bug.

For a brief explanation: it happens.

For an exhaustively long explanation: this thread.

This happened to me when my honor 3 monks were on a hill not even moving! The enemy was really far away and no fighting was taking place between any of my units, and they were all close together.

I have played over 300 games and not once have my units routed for no reason. There is always a reason they rout though I GET MY ASS KICKED

i have routed an enemy within 5 seconds of the game starting in MP. Of course, they had an army of arqubuisers and it was thundering HAHA on that person. Pity it was before i learnt the F2 function

Thanks for your help Anssi (and all those who tested!)

That's a real pain in the arse! Looking back, I can think of another occasion where half my army routed as a result of these 'stacked orders'.

It's definately worth knowing about these things!

It's a shame. I get my men all nice and set up and then...they run away.

Do think that in some cases this may reflect a lack of confidence in their general?

Now that I've read about all your expereinces and the explanation of the rout bug, I think I know now why my two units of cav archers who were at full strength and were BEHIND my main army line with the enemy really far away all of the sudden turned around and ran.

Why did you bring 16 Female Ashigaru? Keep clicking weather, they're only strong one week a month.

No I think they routed. You gotta pump the honour up on cav if you've gonna use them away from your main force.
