All that muscle you were carrying will start to run to fat, before you know it you'll be dragging a big blubbery whale of a body around instead of a mean killing machine, for the same weight.

You and me both. This week I've injured my back, my wrist, my left calf and re-tweeked my groin (had a grade III strain a while back, lots of bruising, plenty of pain). So instead of getting back into exercise I'm going to be stuck doing rehab exercises and applying ice for a couple weeks.
Muscle is fundamentally different to fat. Not reducing intakes at the same time as reducing exercise will get you fat. Your muscle fibres will still be there, you will just lose power/strength/endurance.
