Default Does anyone else shop at second hand clothing stores?

I loved used clothes and shoes! I have a compulsion for new(old) clothing and shoes. I visit Salvation Army (two different locations) around here on multiple occasions. Though I get my shoes used on ebay. I bought two pairs of pants, one shirt and one baseball cap the other day for 9 USD. I have bought enough clothing over the years to wear something new every day of the year! Perhaps another useless thread, but I just wanted to share my fashion sense! I write this as I wear my 99 cent San Diego Padres cap!

edit: I went to a yard sale in Maine once and the givers of said sale were selling what I thought were used underpants! Gross! That is a article of used clothing that I will not buy!

I just buy mine out of ASDA (Walmart accross the ocean), it's practically as cheap anyway.

People that spend £50 on trainers etc need a proper pimp-slapping!

I used to shop at thrift stores a lot, as some of the stuff is awesome if you have the time to rummage. Just make sure you wash every thing in hot water before putting it on.

    Used shoes? No thanks...

In fact, the whole idea of used garments in general is disgusting. (No offense.) You don't know who wore the clothes and what they did in them before they were run through a crappy washing machine with a bunch of other questionable junk, but you should know that a lot of it can't be washed out.

I haven't in a very long time but there were times, when cash was tight and time was not, when I did occasionally. Not regularly, and not for shoes though, only clothes (outerwear: shirts, jeans, sweaters, coats, etc.).

Back when I was in Jr. high school, the kids were manic about Polo shirts (collared pullover with the lil polo guy on it). My folks were forkin' out tons of money for me and my brother's private musical education, so times were tight. I came home one day and she had six (six!) genuine Polo shirts for me; I was so ecstatic. When I asked her how she afforded it, she grinned and said, "cost $2 each." She found them at a local thrift store, in new condition. I didn't care that they came from a second-hand shop--I was happy to have the 'in' thing for once.

Edit: with times being very tight here in CA, young people (late teens and twenties) who live on their own in mid-town, the trendy neighborhood full of clubs and coffee shops, shop quite a bit in the many thrift stores that have sprung up. Some swear by it. These stores have character; not your typical bare-bones converted empty warehouse, etc..

Coats are ok to get second-hand. Anything else is questionable.

I don't mind the potential dirtiness factor. I always wash them before I wear them. I actually love the smell of the place, I assume it is the detergant they use to wash the clothes, hopefully that smell is not unsanitaryness! :P I have actually found clothing with tags still on them, I assumed they are defective or damaged in some way before hitting the shelves of someother retail store. Shoes, never had a problem. Always polished, they never smell, broken in, etc.
Though I have had one bad experience. I bought a white button down shirt took it home, and when I took a better look at it, it had bright yellow armpit stains! Gross! I promptly threw it away! Only bad experience though. Rummagaing thru the racks is reminicient of my shopping for toys as a child!

I shop at yard sales and second hand places a lot, simply because I think it is the height of stupidity and arrogance to go waste a bunch of money getting something brand new when you could get a comparable (and often, brand new, and in perfect condition) item for a tiny fraction of the price that would otherwise end up in a landfill. I don't get as excited about it as A Nerd obviously does, but yeah, I shop there. :P

False humility is worse than arrogance.

I agree with PJ assume everything is covered in Semen

I would only shop at Mens Wharehouse and Polo if I had the money. I like clothes and I like looking good. Kids today look like bums

£50 is the average price, especially since the cheapest shoes/trainers I can get are around the £50 mark. Not my fault they don't cater for size 12 and above.

This. Coats, jackets, etc are best second hand. A good leather jacket second hand has character. I mean seriously, it could have been involved in all sorts of shenanigans.

Would if I could, designer-clothes have long life. But I know only 1 shop and it's in Amsterdam which I only visit if I have a good reason, think nuclear-holocaust or a zombie-apocalyps.

I like anything that has a twinge of nerdiness. 70s-esque if you will. Anything that is no longer in fashion if I can find them. Plaid, cords, polyester, etc. I found nice cotton pants, khaki like (you know the cotton dockers material) that had lines in them like cords. Nice. Do you know how hard it is to find a nice pair of plaid pants?! Especially not made of wool. Go on ebay and see how quickly such pants are bid upon! I never thought of a trench coat though, something worth looking into.
