    Default S.P.Q.R campaign

Hey, I've seen that no one has posted a thread about S.P.Q.R campaigns. Someone HAS played S.P.Q.R, right? I thought it would be interesting to post a thread on this game. I'll put more posts soon.

I think I've played it a few turns once. I don't remember much of it, except that Rome looks awesome.

Yea, it totally looks awesome. I played the game for about 10 15 turns now-it's hard!!!! The other roman factions declared a civil war and attacked Rome at around turn 6-the Scipii got this huge army I didn't see before. I fought them off, but it wasn't easy. I captured Carthage, Thaspus, Lilybaeum, Patavium and Corinth- it was tough! There's something about S.P.Q.R., it seems as if their units are weaker than the other romans- and you start of with really good units with lots of experience, too.

Weaker units and civil war. To think I played a Roman faction and attacked SPQR early on once, I didn't survive for too long as all other Roman factions became my enemy right away.

In another game I conquered about the whole map and just had to clean a few factions, including SPQR. The other Romans were killed off already by barbarians. Again a nightmare to just destroy Rome.

I installed RTW again yesterday and have a Julii running. The Britons are a pain, good thing I can train aux archers now.

What i don't understand is how the other romans attacked me so early. I can't check their standing with the people, though, because as soon as I open the senate scroll, the game just exits.

SPQR is the senate faction, so it may indeed be buggy there when you open that tab.

Quite possible Motep. Sounds like it needed some graphic file, so just a copy of one with the proper name could do the trick. The hard part can be to figure out where and what.

The game is getting tough! The Scipii declared ceasefire AND allied with Carthage, so now I'm being attacked by them too. I added Sparta, Mediolanum, Cirta, Athens and Larissa to my territories, while the julii and scipii almost took rome. I'm attacking the scipii cities in Sicily as they are poorly defended. At least I have plenty of generals-I get suitors and candidates for adoption almost every turn! I think my generals alone would soon outnumber my troops.

The SPQR is not meant to be played even if it is the strongest faction early on due to it's starting generals and armies. When the AI controls them, they have three advantages, of which you retain only one (but it's a huge one).

    1. AI controlled SPQR has a hard-coded alliance with the three regular Roman factions. As such it is not attacked whatever it does, until the "A Chance for Power" event comes into play. If you are playing them, the alliance is just a regular RTW alliance and the AI Romans have "Rome" as an objective. As soon as you move your armies away, they attack you.

    2. AI controlled SPQR gets regular cash injections. When you are playing, you start going in the negatives because your army upkeep cannot be matched by an underdeveloped Rome initally.

    3. SPQR settlements never rebel. This is true for both AI controlled SPQR and for human controlled SPQR. You can see how this is a great strategical advantage.

My advice: queue as many buildings as you can with your inital cash. You'll be broke on turn 2 anyway. Take your armies and awesome generals and just take the greatly developed Roman cities next to you. They'll declare war anyway. Once you consolidate the Italian peninsula and Sicily, start expanding towards Greece and Carthage, and just hold of the Gauls and other rabble in siege defenses. Let them develop their piss-pooor barbarian cities, you have bigger fish to catch. Also never click on the senate tab when playing SPQR this will crash your game.

The start is the hardest part, lategame will be a breeze for SPQR. Whilst you don't have gladiators and temples (an oversight which can be easily fixed by editing a text file) you do have First Cohorts in Rome, that are superior to regular Cohorts. I advise you to mod in a temple of Mars, Ceres and Vulcan in your SPQR faction if you are serious on playing them. They will become a Roman superpower.

The art of war, then, is governed by five constant
factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations,
when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.

    These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth;
    (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.

Thanks for the advice-the game's getting easier now though as I destroyed the scipii and Julii-once I developed patavium and lilybaeum, they didn't have a chance- I quickly captured their cities. Only the brutii are left, they're holding on to croton as I took their other cities. I decided to let the barbarians live a little longer, and moved down to asia minor from Carthage. I took nepte and siwa, I'm going to take the other settlements in between soon, as I stopped playing for a while after I took siwa. I was thinking not to invade into Egypt yet as they're providing me with such an awesome income from trade.
