    Default Very odd behavior!

Just the other night I was having trouble sleeping. I decided to step out for some air.

It was well after 1 am. I started for the front door, but something told me to use the backdoor instead. That was a bit odd I thought.

Anyway, I went out the backdoor and was just standing there for a while. It was a warm enough night for Feb. in Bavaria...which only means it wasn’t freezing.
Then I heard scratching and snuffling. Then I heard a large dog panting. (I mean really big) I’ll go and have a look I thought and took a step in that direction.

The next thing I knew I was slamming the door and locking it. I thought I should turn on the light and have a look outside. Instead I slammed down the rolling shutter over the door.

    What the heck just happened?

I am not afraid of dogs!

Granted, we don’t have stray dogs around here and people lock up their pets at night.

Where did the dog come from and what in the world made me panic over it.

I just can’t figure it out.

    Any ideas?
Anyone else ever found themselves doing something counter to their intentions?

I guess it's sorta human nature. Big, scary dogs growling would instinctively create a fearful response in humans.

It may have been a man in the bushes breathing heavily. Maybe next time you go outside you should put on a shirt

When you're half asleep, you react instinctively, right? So the survival instinct kicked in, and you protected yourself from a potentially man eating dog.

    lol @ MRD

Sometimes when I get really tired I do a lot of stuff on auto-pilot and I don't know what I'm doing, that's probably all that happened.

Perhaps it was a Barghest or another demonic creature and you were saved by some good-natured outside intervention.

It sounds a bit weird though, if you twitched or so that would be more explainable, but taking several steps and closing a door is a bit much for an unintended action.

Maybe it wasn't a dog but a bear? And then you smelled it and subconsciously your lizard brain smelled 'bear' and made you run?

Well we all know what happens if a bear crosses the border: http://www.spiegel.de/international/...423734,00.html

We do have beavers showing up now and again. I just saw one in the creek (bach) at my front door, a couple of weeks ago. I am sure he will be exiled to Poland, like his other relatives, just as soon as the authorities catch up with him too.

It couldn’t be much weirder if it were a Barghest, though I did not have any sense of foreboding or fear when it took place.

But now that you bring up black dogs, maybe I should ask a alikchi hopaii about it.

You‘ll have to ask MRD what that is.

Yeh, must have taken a cheap flight from Seattle and couldn’t find the airport after Oktoberfest.
