Recipe: Army Field Coffee
Dump 3 lb. of coffee grounds into 5 gal of water and boil, sprinkle with salt and egg shells to make the grounds sink. Serve luke warm.

I swear I have seen them use coffee canned in 1943, so... that stuff.
British Army coffee put me off the drink for years. This documentary footage demonstrates the key reasons:

I got very used to drinking absurdly strong and sweet tea, a peccadillo I indulge to this day. However, more usually I like to drink Earl Grey with lemon and occasionally a good green tea for the afternoons.

Having finally got used to good coffee that doesn't rely on mud for its taste, my mornings start out with a really strong espresso. Now and again, I'll linger over a cappucino.
