There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
Everybody will probably have a different answer. Responsibility (and owning up to those responsibilities), honor, courage, having a penis, whatever... my answer would be solidarity; I've stopped concerning myself with problems that aren't my own (or my immediate others).
If we are going to do the one word thing to start: Integrity

I used to work directly with a lot of "men" that had absolutely zero integrity... so I don't know. I think it's a fanciful notion, but it doesn't seem to directly correlate to anything other than personal preferences.
A penis.
Not posting bad threads.
Being an adult male.
I think it's confusing to answer the question like it's asking "what makes a great man, a great man?" but just leaving out the great parts.
the right woman.

Hehehe, and after that you're just a dick.
Here's an article in the WSJ ya might find interesting Strike. Where have the Good Men Gone?

A man is a human being with hair on its chest. The rest are womenfolk.

That was a good read.
I feel like I skipped being a teenager/pre-adulthood.
I was a bit slow to develop at first, at 15 the only thing on my mind was still war and football. But now mostly I work/go to Uni, I don't mess around smoking pot and I lost all interest in gaming years ago. I didn't mess around with my education or go on gap years to 'discover myself', I'll have graduated as an MA at 21 im just a few months with savings ready to move out and build my own life. Which is pretty much as young as you can be in such a situation with the education system here, most people I know my age have went to colleges (which are like a second attempt at school) to get qualifications to move on to Uni, or are just starting Uni/further education having done this. So in this respect I am very happy.
Hopefully I will be married by 23 max, another guy at work that's my age is getting married and I'm feeling left behind. Of course, at Uni nobody would marry that young, but I'm not interested in career-crazy women that don't want to have kids until they're 40.
At the end of the day politics is just trash compared to the Gospel.
That's why I have such little faith in the upper and middle-class. I have trouble getting along with those boys because, essentially, they... they are just boys. If I had to take a crack at defining manhood, the best I can say is: Responsibility, experience, integrity, self-reliance and strength. Is that good enough?

Strange article. They mention movies like superbad:
How about...Sex and the City:Domestic: $121,463,226 71.5%
+ Foreign: $48,408,493 28.5%
= Worldwide: $169,871,719
The mention playboy...Domestic: $152,647,258 36.8%
+ Foreign: $262,606,383 63.2%
= Worldwide: $415,253,641
How about Cosmo:Playboy magazine, once among the largest-circulation magazines, is cutting the circulation it guarantees advertisers to 1.5 million from 2.6 million, a 38 percent decrease.
Why is this critique focused on men specifically"Cosmo's iconic brand continues to grow: 18 million readers and over 5 million uniques on our website. And after a 12 month period of delivering over 3 million copies a month, we decided the time was right to increase our rate base."
Adulthood is, as they say, graduating getting a job and being responsible for yourself. It's really a bare minimum thing. It's bizarre that they put marriage and children in there as part of the requirements for being an adult
Is the conclusion of the article that men have identity conflict and are working out who they are and what they want in their 20's, instead of getting married after college and settling down with a stay at home wife because that was what you did? I mean, don't get me wrong I dislike immature people as much as the next person, but the framing of the article is wonky, both the gender focus and the historical perspective.
Anyway, biased and poorly thought out sociological theorizing with a whiny tone is adolescent.

Well yes, that is much more productive than doing what most of my friends have done since leaving school, which is to either stay or home or be funded by their parents while they share places to rent, and spend most of their time on drinking/drugs and playing their xbox, with no job or qualifications and living off a mix of the state/their parents.
That is not working out who you are, its a waste of time.
Of course, that's still far less bad than the richer ones that go exploring the world to 'discover themselves'.
Heh, I used to be depressed because the above types seemed more mature than me, but now I'll be able to be financially independent and earning decent money at 21.

Put in a hard day's work, take responsibility for your actions, feed your kids and make sure they are safe, shtumpf the wife into unconsciousness, then go downstairs, pop a beer, sit on the sofa and ponder the glories of the universe while the rest of the house sleeps.

traveling is awesome. i love it. this is just anti-traveling bs!!!! i have been financially independent since 18 and ive travelled parts of the world, its very good experience and imo worth every penny you spend on it. tbh its not that expensive at all, unless you drink all day and do stupid stuff (breaking things, or breaking yourself) its about as expensive as living in europe or america.
exploring the world and understanding what goes on around you is every bit part of a real man as settling down and caring for your loved ones is.
