    Default Steam issues

I get the following error when attempting to install Steam:
Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package

Running as admin gets same error, and the program has been unblocked. Attempting to run in compatability mode for previous Windows also gets same error.

Short of a Windows re-install, does anyone know of a way around this?

When I bought my new PC, I planned to immediately upgrade my version of Vista, so I did not buy the disc for the repair/reinstall. I bought the disc and upgraded, assuming this would fix my problems, and it has not. I am not in the least excited about doing a complete reinstall and then having to transfer everything back over from my backup, if for no other reason that sheer anger and principle that I have to have steam just to be able to play the new shogun.

Have you tried re-downloading the Steam installer?

Try creating another user account on your PC and installing Steam logged in as that user.

On Steam, delete everything except the steam apps folder (which contains your games), then double click on Steam, or re-download steam from website and have it override the install directionary.

It seems like a Windows Installer problem- probably with temp files in your user profile. Rather than trying to find the offending files, I figured it was much easier to just try installing it as a different user. If that worked, we would know the problem was specific to your profile.

Just curious.... did you reformat your drives when you did this or just install over the existing data?
