Eh that would be because a lot of them are not white, Russia stretches from Europe to the Pacific remember

I think its an example of people conflating race with culture. We tend to think of white skin = western, but Russia isn't really western, so we don't think of them as being white. There was a thread a while back that supported this idea... Bosniaks were less likely to be classified as white compared to Croats/Serbs, just because they were Muslim.
