Night 0

Outside Cerulean Cave, the night was crisp and clear. Light from the moon and nearby city made it just the right level of light for someone to sneak around unseen, yet see what he was doing. Occasionally the rustling of bushes or the shuffling of feet could be heard, but all of the trainers were too deep in the cave to know about anything happening on the outside.

Suddenly, three cloaked figures zipped over to the mouth of the cave with several contraptions in their hands. Working furiously for about thirty seconds, they then leapt away when they were apparently done. They stood admiring it for a few seconds, when a passing park ranger noticed them.

“Hey! What are you troublemakers doing?”

“Did somebody say trouble?”

The three cloaked figures trembled with excitement, and in a flash threw off their disguises.


With a glint in their eyes, the Team Rocket Trio began their infamous motto.


“Prepare for trouble!”

“And make that double!”

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all peoples under one nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

“Jessie!”

“James!”

“Team Rocket will blast these twerps at the speed of light!”

“They’ll surrender before they can even prepare to fight!”

“Meowth! That’s right!”

With that, Team Rocket’s treacherous plan was revealed. Set up in front of the cave entrance was a massive pile of explosives, which led to a detonator right in front of James.

“Wit all dose twerps stuck down in da cave, dere won’t be nobody to stop Team Rocket anymore!”

“You might say they’ve got a rocky road ahead of them! Ahahahaha!”

“Just hit the detonator already!”

James threw the switch, and a huge explosion shook the ground. When the dust cleared, the mouth of Cerulean cave had been entirely sealed up with massive boulders. The painful screams of the Pokemon and trainers below were muffled by tons of solid rock. No one would ever know they were down there suffering.

Team Rocket rejoiced, laughing since for once their plan had actually worked. Now nobody would be able to stop Team Rocket! They would rule the world!

What actually occurred was as follows:

James threw the switch, and absolutely nothing happened.

“What’s going on?”

“All of our bombs must be duds!”

“That’s not possible! Get those bombs over here and have a look at the fuse, James.”

James did as he was told and moved the bombs closer to Team Rocket and away from the cave. Sure enough, when he checked the fuse, it was simply not connected properly. James re-connected the fuse, threw the switch, and beamed proudly.

“There! Now they should explode any second now.”

“You idiot! We’re standing right next to them!”

The bombs now exploded properly, engulfing Team Rocket and entirely missing Cerulean cave. In a puff of smoke, Team Rocket was sent flying high into the air.

“Looks like Team Rocket’s blasting off again!”

“I wish we got more than just a cameo in this game!”

The blast sent the trio far off into the distance, where they disappeared with the twinkle of a star. The park ranger just stared with a confused look for a minute or so, and then left.



Inside the cave, all 17 competitors had successfully entered the arena. When the clock struck 12, a strange voice boomed across the stadium, sounding like it was coming from a loudspeaker- but there were no loudspeakers in sight.

“I welcome you all to the Pokemon World Championship Tournament. I know you are all eager to begin. So without further ado, let us begin the voting to decide the first duel!”
