Actually, nothing happens. Nothing major I mean.

In my recent game the Oda (yes, they survived!) took it all the way home and declared themselves shogun. I thought this might end the game, but nope, I was free to continue playing without a "Defeat!" screen in sight. All that happens is they become the "Oda Shogunate." And are regarded by the other AI as such.

Something to note: Realm divide is a lot scarier when you're dealing with a Shogunate controlled by an AI clan.

Takeda is spreading like wild fire in my current Hojo campaign. This is something I will have to look out for. I hesitate to attack the southern borders of my very friendly ally the Takeda clan. :O

If they are really a challenge, and you are decided to double cross them, I'd suggest you do it properly and thoroughly. Turn christian, build missions/churches in provinces neighbouring theirs and send in your monks to raise rebel armies that will steal the provinces from the Takeda -ready for you to walk in. If the Takeda get wise to this, deploy matchlocks in your nice hojo castles and watch their now useless cavalry dismount, assault and shatter under Teppo fire.

Yesterday I decided to break the truce. I launched an attack at took a province. They had one full stack up north that I defeated in a siege defense, bloody battle it was, I just barely won! Takeda Shingen fell in that one! Now I am rolling along quite nicely. I must admit the difficulty level I am playing is low, in his large empire he has few armies, just little garrisions mostly and one full stack he has been raising over the turns as I take his poorly defended castles. I will attempt a harder difficulty when I finish this campaign, for now, I am still learning. The small purple clan Hojo starts at war with was tougher than Takeda has been up to this point. It is still fun though, albeit just a little too easy. What do I expect though, I am playing on easy! :P

Thanks for the advice though, I will probably employ some of in in my next Mori campaign on Normal difficulty! :)

I'm dealing with a Takeda Shogunate in my Shimazu campaign (hard). They've killed the Ashikaga twice. They are a war machine, though still under 25 provinces. I got the Realm Divide event, managed to keep an ally, the Matsuda, but the Takeda are steamrolling. They methodically siege city after city, using at least 3 full stacks to assault. Think I'm gonna lose this campaign :)

I'm pretty sure another clan claimed the Shogunate in my first (Shimazu) campaign, but I ultimately won the game by conquering Kyoto and the requisite number of provinces myself.

Try sneaking an amphibious assault behind their front lines, you may well find theyve got barely minimal defences in the majority of their cities. A couple of stacks (plus a few ninjas & monks stirring things up) can do immense damage to their economy and thus their ability to wage war at the front.
