Pokémon Black and White

Thought I'd start a thread since the game was released in both EU and USA in the last few days and Husar told me that there's a small portion of Orgahs who enjoy these games as much as I do! My copy of White arrived today after I cancelled my DA2 Signature Edition and went for the cheaper option; penny-pinching sucks.

I've already played the game in Japanese, managed to get my seventh badge before the language barrier just got too much for me and I felt I was missing too much of the narrative to justify continuing to play; my team at the time was Samurott, Darmanitan, Galvantula, Archeops and Reuniclus... pretty solid unit, though I'm going to try things a little differently this time around.

Just started my English playthrough, picked Smugleaf (pffft, Snivy, whatever :P) as my starter and proceeded to head through all the early content; first gym battle was alot easier than I remembered. Currently powering through to get to the big city place to see how good this Victini is.

I got White, am currently somewhere past the first gym. My starter is an Oshawott and I think he's only a level away from evolving. No idea what my lineup is going to be yet, but Water-type is obviously spoken for, I already have a decent electric-type in that horse thing, same with fire-type, and I already have a good flyer in the Pidove but it seems to me that it might be this version of the game's Pidgey, so I'll be looking for upgrades on that one. Other two slots right now are filled with the Psychic-type from the Dreamyard (Muuni or something) and the little puppy thing.

...yeah, I'm not good at remembering species names. The plan is that once I get my lineup set for good, my main rotation will be named after Napoleon and his marshals.

Oshawott is great; it has this move called Shell Blade (at least, that was it's Japanese name) that it learns when it evolves at 17, basically destroys everything that doesn't outright resist it. Even after it had fully evolved and I'd picked up more moves for it, I still found myself going back to Shell Blade time and time again.

I didn't get around to using the electric zebra (I'd seen this little guy in the Pokédex and immediately said "OMG WANT IT"), and I think I threw the fire monkey into the Box System after beating the first gym, since it's evolution looked a bit 'meh'. I have a knack of catching stuff and immediately checking websites to see if it's any good, really.

Well, I started with Tepig. It's a normal tradition for me to go with the fire type. Haven't gotten far as of yet, what with the work. But interesting little differences, such as the Team Rocket equivalent - Team Plasma, appearing very early on. And the two opening battles. Wandering around the Dreamyard, in anticipation for the first gym (did the first battle in the gym, and just scraped by, so I knew I had to heed the Leader's advice).

Enjoying it so far, tis a nice relaxing way to spend a half-hour after a long day of computer programming and writing reports, and other such yucky college work.

Also, I do very little of raising a team. I raise my starter Pokemon (or occasionally some random Pokemon I encounter and take a liking to) and they are my key element. The other Pokemon are usually just HM users and semi-strong fall guys for the Elite Four Battles.

Just caught Zekrom, now I'm after Thunderun!

Also, to any one who is still near the beginning of the game: I never needed an Electric pokemon until the 6th Badge oor so, and the cave you got through to reach the 6th gym has joltiks, the spider, and the one I got, tynamo, which evoles into this guy.

You make him evolve into eelektross via a thunderstone.
Recommend you wait until after 44, so it learns thunderbolt.

Got White today.

I have a tradition of picking Fire, but I chose Oshawott. I don't like Fire/Fighting all that much, but I feel like I'm betraying Charizard. Plus I'd feel even worse if I got that Fire monkey. I'm considering restarting because I've only just gone past route 2.

I too normally pick fire starters, with the exception of Tododile and Oshawatt.
The only reason I did not choose fire this time is because I believe a Fire-type pig should evlove into a nice, juicy, ham.
Or bacon.

A little update from me!

My Smugleaf evolved into Servine, who isn't as cute but still maintains the whole "haterz gonna hate" vibe that I like so much; I used the Grass Knot TM on it, seems to kill alot of the stuff I'm starting to face in one hit, which is good. I managed to add a Drilbur to my team, he seems to be an absolute beast; he's Rash-natured, which is good for the additional speed though the defense drop is a bit gah-worthy. They're both in the early 20s.

Currently working on Victini; keep catching the little furball but he doesn't have the Modest/Timid nature I want, so I've been soft-resetting alot. The hunt continues. ¬_¬

I'm going at a bit slower of a pace than the rest of you - am about to take on the fourth gym. I'm determined to plow through the game blindly, as in very little if any online referencing. As a result it's a bit more harrowing as I don't know exactly what lies ahead, but hey, I've got to kill my Spring Break somehow, right? Current lineup is the first evolution of Oshawott (so the equivalent of Wartortle), Victini, Pansear, Pidove's evolved form, Blitzle, and the Lipuppy or whatever's evolved form. All are in their early to mid-20s, save for my starter, which is around 26-27. The plan is to switch out Pansear since Victini can do double duty, and possibly the evolved Lipuppy, but it's serving as a good HM slave for now. Blitzle's usefulness also seems to be diminishing, although that might just be because I've run into a streak where Electric-type is completely useless.

Also, Secura: you're one of those players, eh? I never bothered with Pokemon's natures; catching legendaries just one time is painful enough.

I actually don't bother with EV training, since that's a bit too complex for me and detracts from the story-based play of the game, but I do try to aim for beneficial natures and movesets that can be used competitively, and I'm not above extensive Day Care abuse to get egg moves if I need 'em.

I'm still soft-resetting for a Modest/Timid Victini, but no joy so far. -_-

I've always had a soft spot for the pokemon games, but those Black/White starters just look silly. There's always been ridiculous looking pokemon, but the starters (with the exception of that penguin) have always looked cool, my favourites being the charmander and totodile lines. I haven't even played the game, read any reviews or even seen any gameplay footage, but I'm already disappointed that they didn't make cool looking starters.

I stuck with Oshawutt. I've only just got to the sand route place, I haven't been playing as much as you people. Like GH, I'm going to blindly jump into White. That's how I played Red, Yellow, and Gold, and I recall having the most fun with those. All I've done is looked at a list thing of all the Pokemon so I know which ones are what types. I replaced that stupid monkey with a Darumaka. He has way better moves. I also scorn Timburr. Not only is that a horrible name, he looks too ugly. I had a Blitzle, but it died any single time a special attack hit him. 11 Sp Def at level 14 is utterly horrible. My other guys are a Munna (I hope to evolve or replace, I'm not a big fan of the flowers), Sewaddle, Throh, and Patrat.

I have no idea where to get Vicinti. Fire/Psychic would come in very handy.

If I didn't lose my Platinum version (waiting confirmation by aunt - it was in her car last I saw it), maybe I could trade you something with the Pokerus.

Yes. The Pokerus. I got it from a Machop I caught before I challenged Roark. My pokemon have crazy high stats.

Gah.
Just beat the "main story line" of the game.
Unlocked the national pokedex, and can enter the eastern part of the world.
Just one problem: the pokemon levels jumped from the 50s to 65 being the minimum.
Majority of my party didn't hit 50 yet.
Grind time.

Next legendary to catch: Kyurem!

Must complete the Tao Trio!
.......too bad I can't catch Reshiram....

From the game's main menu, go to "Mystery Gift" and download it (you may have to configure your DS to a wireless connection first). Go to any Pokemon center and there will be a dude to give you the "Liberty Pass". Once you get that, go to the leftmost pier in Castelia City, take the boat, and go to the island. Victini is in the bottom of the lighthouse.

BTW, all of this information is included in one of the supplementary manuals that comes bundled with the actual game, so I don't consider it straying from the "go in blind" strategy.

Now, for a real question. Are there any reliable electric pokemon? As it stands, I have literally no way to deal with Flying, because I don't have a Rock or Electric in my party. I wouldn't mind Rock, but half the moves have bad accuracy, and the other half have bad damage... except for Stone Edge.

edit: Beat the third gym, switched Munna out for one of those Psychic/Flying birds that N had. The 'mon has huge special attack, but he can't take a hit for anything. I might get one of those flying squirrels, but they seem like they aren't as good as evolved Pokemon... like 1.5 tier, maybe.

I caught a Modest Victini after several dozen attempts; proceeded to decimate anything and everything with it, even when the opponent had a level advantage. Felt really cheap to use a legendary at that stage, so now I'm looking for a Jolly Darumaka to sweep through the third gym instead.

If anyone's looking for another specialist to fill out their lineup, I think I just found a decent Ice-type in the Cold Storage section of Driftveil. "Vanillite" I think, got it at around 24-25 so I still have a bit of training for it to do. Hopefully it'll evolve, as it's most likely going to be my dragonslayer.

Yeah but the pure electric needs a Thunderstone, and evolves at level 39 from a guy that can't learn any new moves. So I'd have to train it for a crapton of levels before I could evolve it... but if I wanted any good moves, it would take even longer. Zap Cannon is awesome, but it's at level freaking 69. I hate it when Game Freak does that.

Zap Cannon is awful, the high damage and guaranteed paralysis doesn't make up for the low chance-to-hit; it's like a bad version of Blizzard/Fire Blast/Thunder.

I'm currently levelling up to prepare for the fourth gym; I'm currently using Servine, Drilbur, Darumaka and Solosis. My team could use some Water/Ice/Electric moves, but otherwise I'm doing well. :3

Fine then. Thunderbolt at 44, and Wild Charge (90 power + STAB, with recoil) at 59. Acid Spray at 49 looks pretty awesome.

Apparently Tynamo is super duper rare in the one place you can get it.

You can get a free thunderstone in the route 9(I think mega mart. Go to top floor and talk to the man in blue.
Recommend you evolve him after 44, for obvious reasons.
Also, once you get the lucky egg, its remarkably easy to level up pokemon.

Hmmm? Oh, all it does is boost the exp. gain for which ever pokemon is holding it.
Prof. Juniper gives it to you for no apparent reason at all.
She just pops up in the middle of the cave your walking through and gives it to you.
I do believe its the very same cave where you find tynamo.

Been playing the game pretty heavily while my laptop was being looked at, just claimed the seventh badge and unveiled N's mysterious plot regarding the Tao Pokémon; having a fairly easy time of it currently, seem to pretty much destroy everything I face with little fuss.

Caught the Musketeer Trio Legendaries.
(Keldeo is the unofficial fourth Musketeer, and is only available in an unreleased event)

Btw, you much catch Cobalion before you catch the other two.
All 3 are at lvl. 42.

Most Psychic Pokemon can learn Ice Beam I think.

I've used Darmanitan a lot more since he evlolved. He easily became my most used Pokemon. It would be Dewott if every wild Pokemon between Clay and Skyla wasn't either Grass or Electric...

Try catching a sigilyph from the desert resort.
Psychic and flying, it is an unusually effective combination.

I have one, it was just in my PC. I switched it out with Tynamo when I got it, since I was going through that electric cave. I changed it for Throh after I got to the flying gym.

My Dewott and Tynamo have evolved. My Samurott has crappish SD (it got 2HKO'd by Cheren's Simipour using Scald), but Eelektric is a freaking beast.
