Most of the time, that's all it takes.Marinelli does describe, in emotional detail, an internal journey that began when he met real live homosexuals and lesbians protesting NOM's cross-country campaign against gay rights and could not help but notice they were just as human as he.![]()
I can easily understand disliking gays. Even dissaproving of homosexual activity. But why would you waste years of your life fanatically fighting it? That's so pointless. So much hatred, you will be consumed by it.
Somewhat it is little wonder this guy got converted by just speaking to some gays. If you have demonised them into some sort of underworld orcs, barely people, out to destroy the life of yourself and your children, then it is a 7.9 Richter shock simply to discover these can be kind, decent, law-abiding people.
Why am I reminded of some other recent events that would clearly demonstrate your second point?
For that sake, lets' go further...over here even smokers are demonized to the point of the absurd. (I do not smoke, I have sensitivity to smoke, used to be an avid anti-smoker...until the campaigns switched from fighting for our rights to oppression of, and demonization of the smokers themselves.) Children are told that if their parents smoke, they are bad people. These are people just like us, not even with different beliefs/culture/lifestyle, just a different addiction...and yet the outright hate you can see directed at them is sickening.
All thiss to agree with Louis that this is truly a rare accomplishment for this chap to have come to that conclusion and "let it go".
Good for him.

I've gone from a chain smoker to non-smoker in the past year. There was no reason back then not to respect the right of non-smokerds to be undisturbed by my habits, and there is no reason now to curb the rights of smokers to engage in their practise.
In general, empathy in society is rapidly decreasing. I blame the internets. People only hear themselves talk anymore nowadays.

Don't you have some kids to tell to get off your lawn, gramps?
Oh, and there are probably some goods at the grocery store that's gone up in price. I'm sure there's a cashier who wants to listen to your highly interestinh story about how stuff was much cheaper in the past as well! Oh, and don't forget to pay for your stuff using only cins. Remember, the smaller the value of the coin, the better it gets!!

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

Not to worry, I know exactly what you mean when you feel uneasy about the pornification of society. I think it has all sorts of deplorable effects.
Well that is one topic where urban progressive and rural theo-conservative meet and overlap, even if coming perhaps from different directions.
Unless you are pregnant, in which case they can charge you with murder...
In a horrifyingly insensitive and counterintuitive move, murder charges were filed against an Indiana woman who attempted suicide in a late stage of her pregnancy.

Back on topic, please guys. We've pulled away from the intended area.

On Topic:
This is a wonderful example of someone recognising that their religion does not actually support demonising normal people who happen to have an attraction to others of the same sex. What is particularly heartening is that this young man seems to have developed the maturity of concience to reject bigotry and keep his faith. As such he can now, hopefully, serve as an example to others and help undermine the "either or" mentality which some people, religious and non religious, try to push with this issue.
