    Default Combat Speed?

    Hey guys,

I'm seeing lots of positive talk about this game but I'm holding off in the meantime (I can't stand no AA!).

The major down side I've seen mentioned is that combat is very fast & I've seen indications that this is so from some videos too.
My friend who has the game claims that combat is not actually all that fast though so I'm confused.

I'm one of the people who likes the slower combat pace used in various other TW mods like RTR, EB, Third Age & Darthmod Empire.
I've seen that Darth is making an S2 Darthmod but there is a bunch of nice seeming stuff with multiplayer & I'd like to get into that but if the combat is normally as fast as its cracked up to be I really don't want to go there.

So can I get some feedback from other .orgers about the combat speed aspect?
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

Combat speed isn't as fast as the lightning quick RTW but it's still a touch too fast imho. It's playable at least, but I still prefer the fantastic efforts of the community modders that makes the fights last a little longer. The good news is, in that aspect, there's already some great efforts. Darthmod and Shogun 2 Realism both boast longer lasting combat.

The speed is really fast, imo. I watched my son play vanilla M2TW yesterday and stuff died SO much slower in that. You could actually zoom in and watch the cool animations. In STW, I pretty much just see sprites - I don't get to see the models of my men.

It's not so fast that you can't control the battle (though heaven help you if you refuse to pause). However, things do happen so fast you can easily lose a unit of cavalry on one part of the battle if you micromanage the other. You just have to pause often and you can be as tactical as you like.

The upside is that battles are fast now and you will be fighting A LOT to become Shogun, so at a strategic level the game feels better paced than M2TW. The turns seem to go faster.

If I could mod the game to slow it down, EB and RTR style, I definitely would. This would be for aesthetic reasons more than gameplay reasons though. There are mini-mods for slower movement speed, but these would boost archery which is already uber, so you'd need to mod that. Nothing much to just slow down kill rates in melee yet, aside from mods that change other stuff - which I am always reluctant to do. I want to master the game out of the box, then I will look at overhaul mods.

Bottomline - speed is an issue, but the game improves so significantly over M2TW and RTW that I would not let it deter you. The AI, in particular, is so much better. It feels like STW or MTW AI with RTW/M2TW graphics and map.

What about simply using half-speed? I love that option, and I use it frequently when I'm getting cute with my tactics. It nerfs archers too, so I think it is a good compromise. What would be perfect would be a 75% speed option I think.

The battle speed is rather fast in my opinion. It appears to me to be faster than RTW but I may be wrong in that. however, there is a mod available at the TWC site that reduces combat speed and provides several variations. This is nice as you choose to keep cav speed slightly faster than infantry. Also it is stand alone so you don't have to use Darth or other more extensive mods if you don't wish to.

its somewhere between MTW2 and RTW its fast but not game breaking. ive started playing MP for first time and althoguh i do find myself frantically tryign to pause at times i am still able to i assume you mean kill speeds when you mean the sped of battles and in this respect it is faster than MTW2 but not as bad as RTW when units just dissolved under a charge. even ashigaru will hold for a few short time under a charge so that you can at least get some support units in there.
