I do my best to promote Romania to be fair, because I love my country and it has a lot of things to offer - and I tend to steer away from working in the public sphere. A very complicated thing to work with / for the government.

Thank you for the appreciation Seamus.

I've just seen this @Montmorency - unfortunately yes, this is a problem, and a significant one which I did wish the government did not turn the eye away from.

I've been to multiple orphanages, working with different charities, and while some of them are in good shape (even public ones), some of them are in a deplorable state. Worst part of it all is not necessarily the building or the housing, or the equipment even - plenty of people are willing to donate - but the human resource part. Working as a caregiver is a strenous, difficult job and with the lack of funding it makes up for a significant issue of integrating those who have been abandoned.

A nice, short summary of the history of Romania dating back to pretty much 8000 years ago.

There are some minor issues with it - the Dacian / Thracian weapon is called a falx (not a flax) and also Vlad the Impaler ruled 3 different times from 1431 to 1477.

    This is a damn shame:

There’s one obvious, notable beneficiary of this situation: Ikea. The company is now the largest individual consumer of wood in the world, its appetite growing by two million trees a year. According to some estimates, it sources up to 10 percent of its wood from the relatively small country of Romania, and has long enjoyed relationships with mills and manufacturers in the region. In 2015, it began buying up forestland in bulk; within months it became, and remains, Romania’s largest private landowner.

The global market’s edacity for timber, perhaps predictably, has gone far beyond the legal limits set up by an already permissive state. According to a 2018 report, initially suppressed by the Romanian government and leaked later that year, the country saw 38.6 million cubic meters of wood exit its forests annually during the preceding four-year period; the government had licensed just 18.5 million cubic meters. In other words, without even accounting for possible violations based on method of extraction, more than half of the country’s timber is illegally harvested. Even legal logging, which on private and public land alike must be preceded by a forest management plan that is approved by the government, can be rife with corruption and abuse. Since roughly the date of Romania’s accession to the EU, between half and two-thirds of the country’s virgin forest has been lost.

Unfortunately, that is the reality and also a very delicate political topic / situation right now.

There has been a lot of backlash and criticism because of illegal logging in Romania and it's still closely monitored, however it's still ongoing. Progress has been made, particularly in protection and reforesting (I participated myself in reforesting some cleared areas) but still a long way to go.

Plenty of places to see - it depends on what you're interested in. One of the newer places to go to is Colibita Lake, which is spectacular. Reminds you a bit of lakes in the Alps.

I also suggest Coltesti Fortress, the Saxon villages (Biertan for example), Bethlen-Haller castle (now a vineyard), Turda salt mine.
