Questions on the Spartan Agoge

Just curious about the effects of the Spartan agoge within the game. In short, is it worth it? Does it make your characters better generals? Or does it merely give them a better chance of acquiring certain traits?

Having a short experience with the game, still finished a KH campaign and always taking advantage of Agoge.It produced better generals but to exploit their full potential a certain amount of your intervention is needed.For example those with the Clerk retinue, would make great governors, or take advantage of the deity trait (make him govern in a certain city where the deity's temple exists), or more military oriented characters (Spear carrier retinue) giving them battles, etc

for roleplaying purposes it is absolutely mandatory! one of my guys failed it and it made for an interesting character, outcasted and looked down upon

One thing i've noticed about Macedonians attending the spartan agoge is that they tend to pick op the trait "Stunningly incompitent"

That depends on the government building present in Sparte, i think. Right now i´m playing Macs; there is lvl 2 ( Macedon Satrapie ) built in Sparta, and all my FM become "Superb Administrators" after they stay a full round within the town. I might add, i´m using Konnie´s EDCT text files, so maybe the unmodified EB is different ( don´t remember ).

IIRC "Stunningly incompetent" just means they are in a city whose government is not compatible with their ethnicity-trait (say, Athenians and the KH type I government (Agoge)). The trait will disappear after they spend a turn somewhere else.

They also can get to become members of the Krypteia, which almost guarantees them becoming excellent generals. This is rare, and they get my best Armies possible.

As to becoming stunning incompentant, this is also a lot to do with ethnicity. Read the description for the FM. As Greeks for example, Spartans rule excellently in a type I gov, but poorly elsewhere. Rhodians, for example rule well (if educated) in type 2 or 3 govs, but terribly in a type I. The beauty of EB though, is that even one of these "stunningly incompentant" men will almost always quickly lose that trait if left to govern a province for a while, dropping first to "administratively adept" then I would say most often to a neutral state. Of course, it's best to let them govern in a Gov Type that suits their background and training.

Building the 2nd Lvl of Schooling in Sparta asap helps quite a bit too; you get fighting men who can govern too, with helpful ancilleries. I'd stay away from the lvl 3 school in Sparta though, as this can detract from their fighting abilities, making them a little too philosophical......;)

i always used the 4 years in sparta and 4 years in athens (altough i changed the athenian goverment to a type 1) the rhodians and athenians just let them be in korinth or chalkis for a while about that stuningly incopetent

also remember to max out the athenian academy and thanks to the spartan agoge they probably never become book worms altough they´ll become good generals and ofc the eleusian trait helps alot and ofc the 2 influence + the krypteia makes them amazing recruiters of spies and assassins if you´re into that (just as decorated hero)

imho the partan agoge gives you influence that can be multiplyed by how many family members you will eventually have so in the long run it pays up in the need for less garrison troops and better morale on the batlefield
