I've never been without a home but I have talked to a lot of homeless people and have "worked" with them. I don't think that can really recreate the feeling of living on the street though. Why do you ask?
It probably doesn't feel very good, since not a lot of people are homeless by choice. Try fostering an addiction or untreated mental illness for a few years and maybe you'll be close.
If you'd really like to know, you could just go out and talk to one for a bit. They're usually quite happy to chat about things, and you don't need to be afraid of them at all. No Queens alleyways though, that wouldn't be smart.

Err...I've been sorta homeless before. My family lived out of a van for about a month while my parents looked for work. It was not fun, it was cold, and though we did ennough money to keep us fed, keeping us clean was another matter.

TosaInu shall never be forgotten.
When I was a kid we used to stack big cardboard boxes from applainces into a giant castle and pretend we were homeless.
I have lived out of a car for one month with my mother. For 3 months I lived out of a church bus with my mother and her snake-oil tent revival preacher husband. For 2 weeks in Las Vegas I slept in my car, showered at the gym at UNLV, and waited for an apartment to open that I could afford. Also, when my ex-wife threw me out of the house while I was out-of-state I had to return and crash in a friends cat poop-infested spare bedroom for 3 weeks.
Those are the closest I have been to being homeless.
