There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

The best option available to a middle-eastern despot is to label his opposition Al-Qaida terrorists.
Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban

How much of that has anything to do with Afghanistan though? I also think that the Arab Spring will do far, far more to maul AQ than even a 100% successful invasion of Afghanistan could have.
The real hotspots for the AQ types are Yemen and Somalia. Somalia is probably the only place in the world when AQ-aligned groups like al-Shabab actually control large portions of land and have a real military presence, as opposed to tight-knit terror cells etc.
At the end of the day politics is just trash compared to the Gospel.
We've had at least some on and off involvement in Yemen since 2002. Same with Mindanao. If anything, this is exactly the kind of thing that our allies would've preferred cross the board as opposed to grueling nation-building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan that -- even if they succeed -- are bleeding ulcers for decades.

I dont care what they thought in 2003 because I was one of the "cowards" and "frenchmen" who was absolutely opposed to action in Iraq. But the simple fact remians that you dont go into a country, lay waste to its infrastructure because some rednecks felt giddy, and then say "my bad" and bail like a frat boy who forgot his rubber. I didn't start this crap, but by god I'm willing to see it through because we as a nation cant go around ***** countires up and then pulling out because all of our fat people on welfare start losing wiehgt in tough times. We made the ,ess, we clean it up

I believe the "5,000" Strike referenced is the number of American casualties, the number of Iraqi/Afgani casualties runs into the millions by now, I'm sure.
Also, if you want to pull the "brown people" card I shall play the "epic fail" card because Afgani's and Assyrians are about as "brown" as Italians.
Unless, of course you only consider Gallo-Arrians to be "white".

The only epic fail is that you cannot see the point.
My point is that you say 5000 casualties is not worthy of consideration, but in another context it was considered enough to go to war over.
Whether it be based on color, nationality, society, ideaology or religion, the point of my "brown" comment was not intended literally...but to illustrate that while we consider the deaths of 5000 innocent 1st world civilians to be total outrage, the millions of casualties of innocent Iraqi and Afghan civilians are seen as a necessary evil.
Oh and to completely digress...in parts of North America I have seen olive-skinned persons of European heritage discriminated against and harrassed because they were not "white-enough" for the pinkies.
