Default Does armor improve survivability in melee combat, or just incoming archer fire?

If there's no data in the game files, I'm not exactly sure how this could be tested without modding. I suppose you could copy/paste a yari ashigaru unit but give it double armor and then see how it lasts compared to vanilla.

Consider this my formal request for research on the matter. I'll help in any way possible. :)

Don't forget there are two values; melee defense and armor.

It would be good to know how to mod the game stats to explore this kind of question. In earlier generations of TW games, there was a simple txt file anyone could edit. However, I'm pretty sure armor will affect melee - it would be blatantly unrealistic if it did not. In previous games, melee kill rates were mainly determined by the difference between attack and armor plus melee defence; I'd wager good money it's the same in this one.

I read elsewhere that armour is a unit's only "defense" when attacked/charged at flank or rear. Defense melee skill becomes irrelevant when flanked or attacked from behind. Not sure if that's true, but kind of makes sense.
