Why long spears are useless?

yeah, why units with long spears are useless against cavalry units or when defending a city( i used to place them in narrow places in a city in RTW and no one would pass)?

what specific units are we talking here, are we talking phalanxes? If so, which nations Phalanx?

in my experience almost everything is usefull against Cavalry when defending a city.

If you are using levy sarissas against armored cataphracts it would be a litte useless, that's right.

They have axes! let them use... I decimate enemy generals, cats, heavy cav. with my levy phalanxes whose secondary weapon is axe also they are better than pezhetairoi in defending city walls.

Phalangitai deuteroi don't use AP axes, only pantodapoi phalangitai do. Could be the former.
