    Unit names
    *****************

    Unit names are japanese derived.


    System:

    "Social Status/Class - Property/1st Weapon | Faction/Pool"

    Examples:

    "Samurai - Daikyu | Chosokabe"

    "Ashigaru - Yari | Oda"

    "Chugen - Yari | Inaka"

    "Samurai - Yari | Inaka"

    "Ashigaru - Yumi | Shiro"

    Term explanations of name parts, examples:


    Pool

    Inaka = Province or units derived from the provincial warrior pool

    Shiro = Castle, spawned from the garrison units pool, to understand also as standing household troops of the capital of the province

    Oda (or any clan names) = Stands for housetroops of the according Daimyo/clan (derived from vanilla base)

    Nanban = Indicates trade with nanban locations/people (europeans), ie. early Matchlock units.

    Han = Feudum (valid for Samurai instead Inaka) / since post v1.98


    Property

    Kashin = Lesser Samurai

    Bushi = Warrior (known already from Onna Bushi, used partly also for other special units)

    Shin = Retainer (Samurai sticked close to the clan or a local family)

    Oban = Elite Guard (the vanilla "great guard" unit), usually elite vassals or elite family members

    Daisho = Elite-retainer warriors sticked to a general or the daimyo himself

    Sensei = Master or Mastery of a weapon branch (the hero units)

    GeSakunin = Peasants (Ashigaru) with land-possession / since post v1.98

    Sakunin = like above (one class above GeSakunin though) / since post v1.98


    Weapon or master of

    Daikyu = Quality bow

    Tachi = Sword

    Kenjutsu = Sword art

    Purpose and meaning of the available units
    *******************************************

    In general:

    - Samurai units are nobles with different social status and possession, in the most cases they a sort of retainer to the Daimyo or its family or to other generals/leaders of the provinces.
    A Samurai is a sort of elite warrior, belongs to the warrior-class by definition. Members of this class are trained in multiple weaponry (sword, spear, bow) from childhood on, as well as they are excellent riders.
    The wealth of a Samurai determines the equipment, and in principle the time he can spend for the training. Most Samurai can afford their own horse, foot Samurai in-game can be understood as dismounted.

    - Ashigaru (here especially the default Yari Ashigaru) are the ones of the bottom side of the social pyramid, peasants who are harvesting the land. While in some Ashigaru units are also mixed-in a few Samurai (besides the unit officer), those Samurai are the mere pretty poor ones, who hardly own more than an Ashigaru.
    In general, the Ashigaru is not a warrior. First the call of a noble can make them to a warrior, they get available weapons, equipment and some training. Ashigaru progressing to a kind of proper soldiers during the Sengoku period and in this mod, too - even new classes of peasants evolved: GeSakunin and Sakunin (peasants with a kind of land-possession).

    - Some special Ashigaru units are standing army warriors or call-by warriors, better equipped, trained and with some experience. Partly even retainers (in the mod the Sword Ashigaru).

    - Wako and Ronin units are mercenaries, fight for money for everybody, expensive to afford.
    Samurai Ronin live by war or at least seek for permanent service, thus excellent warriors, but slightly less morale as the usual Samurai. Wako are seamen, bandits, pirates, not Samurai, but have always combat experience.


    Default Units: (coming with vanilla)

    Yari Ashigaru
    Spear/pike - Mainly peasants, quick deployed men from all over friendly regions, quite less trained, defensive tight and depth lines, with anti-cavalry bonus.
    (Contrary to vanilla, model fights in all situations with their spear/pike)

    Yumi Ashigaru
    Bow & sword - Standing army men, trained with bow and sword, main purpose: siege/field defence and attacks.

    Matchlock Ashigaru
    Matchlock & sword - Standing army men, trained with matchlock and sword, purpose: siege/field defence and attacks.

    Yari Samurai / Yari Ronin
    Spear - Capable standard Samurai warriors, defense and attack for all melee situations, with anti-cavalry bonus.

    Bow Samurai / Bow Ronin
    Bow & sword - Capable standard Samurai warriors, excellent archers, defense and attack for all situations.

    Matchlock Samurai
    Matchlock & sword - Capable Samurai warriors, excellent shooters, defense and attack for all situations.

    Naginata Samurai
    Polearm - Capable slight better (armoured and skilled) Samurai warriors than Yari, defense and attack for all melee situations, with anti-cavalry bonus.

    Sword Samurai / Sword Retainer / Sword Ronin
    Sword - Except for the Ronin, these are close retainers to either a settlement/castle-leader or in the field to a general or army leader.
    Very capable warriors for all melee situations.

    Cavalry
    All mounted men are Samurai (incl. the "light cavalry"), with different social status, analog to the dismounted ones above, have high charge values, and dismounted analog capabilities.

    Monk Warriors
    With different analog weapons to Samurai, capable warriors with high skill and morale, but less armour than Samurai.

    Heroes
    The "heroes" are masters of their weapons in every respect, but not like in vanilla uber units, still the best units in the game.

    Faction-specific Warriors
    The ones which come with vanilla, they have usually diverse advantages to the pendent units. Often to interpret as standing army men of a clan, thus more capable and better organised.

    Ronin
    Available Samurai warriors, without dojo requirement, via market locations recruited, mercenaries.

    Wako
    Combat experienced seamen, pirates or coastal raiders, available via multiple locations (port, pirate liar, tavern), offer their services as mercenary, inferior to Samurai.


    Non-Default Units: (not coming with vanilla / added)

    Sword Ashigaru (faction-specific)
    Sword - Reserved for certain major factions, those men are capable melee warriors, "eventually" becoming Samurai, young retainers.

    Naginata Ashigaru (faction-specific)
    Polearm - Those men are melee warriors of the old way, capable melee fighters with anti-cavalry bonus, but will loose their meaning with the time.

    Yari Ashigaru (faction-specific)
    Spear/pike - Reserved for certain major factions, these men are better trained than their pendents, usually standing army men.
    (Contrary to vanilla, model fights in all situations with their spear/pike)

    Yari Ashigaru (Late) -> "Bushi" (non-faction-specific)
    Spear/pike - These men are better trained and equipped than their pendents, and have higher morale. Reflect the progression of the Ashigaru during the Sengoku period.
    Post v1.98: There are 2 kinds of such progressed Ashigaru, the "GeSakunin" and the "Sakunin" (replace the "Bushi" naming), trained via barracks and require land consolidation.
    The Sakunin (most capable and rich Ashigaru) fight with pike and sword.

    Matchlock Ashigaru (Trade) -> "Nanban" (non-faction-specific, additional units to the vanilla nanban matchlock)
    Matchlock & sword - Standing army men, trained with matchlock and sword, purpose: siege/field defence and attacks.
    Those men are equipped and trained with traded matchlock-guns, independent of a nanban location, and just earlier available than the "Teppo", which are rather equipped with local produced matchlocks.
    Shimazu has a faction-specific version (available as first matchlock Ashi in the game), as for historicity.

    Wako (faction-specific)
    The Mori clan got access to more capable Wako units, as for their traditional naval expertise.

    Onna Bushi
    Added/enabled for recruitment. Capable female warriors of the Samurai class.

    Samurai Retainer (added post v1.99.5)
    Added/enabled for recruitment. Capable warriors of the Samurai class.

    CA's DLC's/Editions

    - TWS2 Limited Edition (or higher), ie. the Hattori clan, is properly implemented into S2R+'s recruitment and balancing design. Of course the content requires the purchase of the game edition.

    - Ikko Ikko (faction DLC), is properly implemented into S2R+'s recruitment and balancing design. Of course the content requires the purchase of the Ikko DLC.

    - Sengoku Jidai (unit pack) is enabled for recruitment in the design of S2R+, incl. a full S2R+ unit combat balancing etc.. Of course the content requires the purchase of the DLC.
    This is then just 10 units more. Note, these units are managed for S2R+'s campaign mode or Custom Battle mode, the unit stats etc. are not modified for the MP mode.
    (S2R+ is not recommended to play in MP mode, see also the main release thread to this point under "Relevant Notes").

    Edit2: More units are added since v2.6, ownerships and also names have been altered, this again since 2.9x versions.

    Example:
    Yari Ashigaru Inaka, 270 men, cost 270, upkeep 108

    Yari Ronin, 120 men, cost 750, upkeep 250
    (these cost/upkeep example values are straight away from the db table, base values, in-game they are different due to different factors like difficulty, building structures, researchment etc.).

    You see, the upkeep for Samurai (clan retainer nobles) has dramatically decreased (they have mainly to pay for themselves), while all other upkeep has "dramatically" increased, especially for mercenaries, and as for common Ashigaru units, the peasants are just away from harvesting the land, so agriculture suffers - that's the basic background.

    Edit: The cost/upkeep system is changed again, ie. Samurai/Monk class units have very low upkeep, except ie. Ronin class units and mounted units. Ashigaru/Chugen class units have high upkeep.

    Info: Note that since version 2.9 the above unit guide contents are partly outdated.
    For now some "Edit" hints are added.
    The thread will be updated when the unit-system is final (latest with release of v3.0).
