I'm way over my head: Il-2 1946

I've bought the game quite a while ago but I probably played the game no more than 1 or 2 hours. I always got discouraged by the sheer knowledge I had to gather just to get started.

That time has come again when I pull my joystick out from under the dust and try again. I've been looking all around the net for beginners' guides but frankly I could get some help.

Problem 1: When I want to take off for a training flight I can't taxi. I just go around in circles until my tail wheel gets off the ground. How can I steer on the ground?

Problem 2: When I'm in the air for a few touch and go's on the airfield to practise my landings and lmy control, I have a hard time locating the airfield. the fact that I just started in a random direction due to problem 1 isn't helping either. How can I navigate corectly to a certain spot without flying around until I see it?

I do not have the game, but I would wager that you need to use the rudders to stear on the ground. Most planes in the real world navigate on the ground by using the feet (rudders - tail wheel control). If you don't have that control on the joystick (e.g. twisting the joystick handle left and right), there should be a set of keys on the keyboard.

If I were to develop a game, I would make it possible to put navigation points on a map or similar.

Dumb it down on the setting menu. Unless you have already done that. I played it with somewhat easier settings (unlimited ammo! :D), the custom dogfights were a blast! Taking off and landing is difficult, I don't know how many times I spun and crashed on a take off. The rudders are how you steer on takeoff. The main campaign is a little boring though.

I'm not even fighting yet. I did that last time, started with trying to take down a friendly bomber to see how my control over the airplane was. Suffice to say i quit at 11-0 or so for the bomber.

This time I'm taking it slow and familiarize myself with my plane before I even attempt a fight.

You get used to the controls. Especially if you turn off stalls and spins, blackouts and redouts. I am an extremely poor pilot, wouldn't even attempt MP, but a large dogfight against all rookie enemies I could manage. I even turned their competancy up a tad as I played more. AA guns are very accurate as I recall though. Try flying slower planes first. I used to like the Hurricane. P-51 was fast but manageable. I found the bf-109 to be tough, but with so many variants there was at least one I could fly. I would reinstall and play again but I lost one of the disks. It isn't in the box anymore and I think I left it in my old tower when I got rid of it! :(

I flew a hurricane and a La-5 yesterday. I was able to taxi but getting properly aligned on the runway was still near to impossible from within the cockpit.

Problem 2 is still unsolved. I'm pretty sure you can set waypoints but I was unable to so far.

Problem 3 arose when I noticed that unless I make constant adjustments, my plane doesn't fly straight in any manner. Although a plane supposed to be trimmed before taking off, it still refues to fly in any manner of a straight line when I leveled out and released my stick.

I always took off from outside the cockpit. Easiest way to do it.

I don't remember anything about waypoints. Generally I think I just followed my wingmen. Could get boring in the campaign as you flew for so long until you encountered some enemy planes. I don't recall being able to set waypoints in campaign, I think it was done for you. They were noted when you opened and closed the map.

I never released the stick. Constantly adjusting to keep the plane flying in the direction I wanted. It seemed to climb everytime I let go. Perhaps it has something to do with the flaps?

On an aside, try dropping some torpedos on a friendly ship. Use unlimited ammo. It was just fun to watch them sink. Every time I tried it with enemy AA, I was in the sea before I even got close! I used the IL-2.

Shooting the parachutes of guys as they were bailing out was also lots of fun! Why was the guy in that video trying to take off without a runway too?! He must be a good pilot! :)

Hey there,

I've been flying the Il2 series for ten-years and I guarantee you will get the hang of it.

Start in the air with the Quick Mission Builder, find a plane you like, get the feel of the plane, and just go farther and farther into the feel of it and all of a sudden you'll be doing carrier landings in the dark. First thing to do is have fun, let the technical stuff come at its own pace.

When you start on the ground, start slowly, apply rudder to stay straight, once you are up to a certain speed, the nose should stay straight after that. It's just the first part where the plane will want to do circles. The map screen (M) will show you your waypoints (where to go points).

Also, make sure you have the game patched up to 4.10.1. (Four separate patches: 4.08, 4.09, 4.10, 4.10.1) These patches add fixes, new planes, weapons and maps, and flight dynamics.

If there is no link to UP3 (UltraPack3), Google it and get the legal torrent. It's about 6GB, and gives you dozens and dozens of new planes, weapons and maps. It's IL2 on Super Steroids. You get everything from WWI planes to Korea maps and Migs.

I'll try the map trick and see if I can get that to work.

I've patched up to 4.10.1 but I'll wait to install the ultrapack until I get the hang of the game.
