Gaming Mice?

This is probably a stupid question, so bear with me here.

How much does the quality of a laser mouse effect gaming, specifically FPS gaming? I used the same mouse (a Microsoft laser with a cord from the early 2000's) for years and never had any trouble. It finally gave out (was not registering right clicks), so I transitioned to one of the many HP mice I've collected over the years from the various computers I've bought.

I cannot be sure, but it seems like now in shooters, specifically Red Orchestra, when I have to make long shots that require getting the sights on a tiny target, mouse movement seems off. Like - I move the mouse just a hair, but the sights move too far in that direction. I've messed with sensitivity and it doesn't seem to help.

So I was looking online at mice specifically made for gaming.

I found this one from Logitech for $29, this one from Microsoft for $56, and this crazy looking one from CYBORG for $121.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on mice or any specific recommendations. Is it even worth it to get a new mouse or is it all in my head? I don't mind spending some money for quality, but I also don't want to pay for benefits so incremental that I won't even notice them. With such significant price differentials, I'm a bit lost.

Razer is meant to be quality gaming mice, but they slap on a massive price tag on their products.

If you were using a normal three button mouse (or two button + wheel) then I don't think you ought to get that weird looking one in the last link....it might take a lot of time to get used to it.
Infact give the one you're using right now some time. Chances are it is all in your head.

You can also try changing the mouse pad. My old optical mouse used to work perfectly on most surfaces including sheets of newspaper (which I had grown accustomed to using). The new one I've been using for like an year works best on orange surfaces, and goes totally sluggish on everything else.
So, yeah, try changing the pad once, before you spend on a new mouse.

I can recommend the SteelSeries Ikari without hesitation.

After wasting money on an uncomfortable, glitchy Razer, I bought the SteelSeries and have never had a more comfortable, smooth tracking mouse.

Since I bought a Microsoft Wireless (although not because it's accurate) I haven't had the pain in my wrist/arm that I used to have with my Razer anymore.
Which just means I can't recommend Razer, as a leftist I have no experience with Logitech mice.

Just to muddy the waters, Maximum PC rated the last one on your list, the Cyborg, as the greatest PC gaming mouse of all time. I wouldn't know.

The ability to put weights into the mouse makes a big difference in my opinion. I have one as such and if far better than the one I had. Though the one I had before was a generic one that came with my PC tower.

I never liked using a wireless mouse for gaming, especially when I played in online league tournaments. The dang wireless version always seemed to have the batteries die at the worst possible moment. I used and still have a wired Razor mouse, and I've been using it since BF2.

On a serious note though... I bought a Razer Deathadder mouse around two years ago for $40, and it's never failed my needs. I honestly think that unless your very technical with mice and need to have that extra 1000 dpi as it makes all the difference, you should aim at that lower priced market and just go for the decent, recommended mice as other posters have put forward, rather then that $110 beast.

lol you people with your fancy mouses at first i used a cheap little cordless usb mouse. It broke and now i use a pocket mouse. Absolutely tiny, its a laser and has a cord. Works fine afte ri got used to the miniscule size. I used to use a computer pad at school until i spilled rum on it so now I just use the desk surface though i have a replacement pad at this point.

i just feel like there are better investments of your money than a mouse.

Most people interact with their computer through two things: keyboard and mouse. Makes sense to obsess a little over getting those right.

Speaking of keyboards, it has been really hard to find one that will register three keys at the same time, at least with two of them being arrow keys. I'm using some ancient keyboard from 2001 with a USB adaptor and I fear the day it gives out.

Depends on what you mean by "average run of the mill", I've had some so bad, if you used the "wrong" surface, they might move the mouse pointer in the wrong direction etc.
I've generally found Microsoft mice to be quite decent for most uses, good sensors and mostly leftist compatible, Logitech are good I hear but I'm stubborn and don't use them the rightist way unless I am on someone else's computer. Razer seems pretty overpriced to me, maybe the sensors are good, but the left mouse button of my Krait failed rather early IMO, that they have a golden USB connector doesn't seem to help with that or have any other uses, except maybe inflate their revenues.

I've had an MX518 for about five-years and beaten it to death, but it still lives and never gives me a moment of trouble.

It's an excellent rat!
