I think communism requires the state. The abolishment of the state and starting to live in communities is text book examples of pure communism though.

It's all in the name. Socialism was founded on the premise of self-sufficient communities which ran themselves without the various worldly evils getting in their way. Of course that didn't work out too well, and as it turns out you do need those government types to babysit the adults.

I was referring to 19th century ideas of socialism. The basic ideology of which is embodied in the communist “end game” scenario where the state is rendered redundant. And this 19th century socialism drew from staunch religious convictions, too. Nothing like the social democrats or revolutionaries of the 20th century.
It seems you are confused with 20th century versions of the ideal which are more often termed Leninist, Stalinist or Maoist depending on when&where you are looking --all of which incorporate a much more significant role for the government since they assume a change initiated from the top down rather than a from the bottom up.

I doubt any ideology drew much religion from the 20th century. But I do however think that marxist socialism (communism really) implied fully equal economical equality by the means of heavy paternalism from the state.
Though trusting the state with your food is something few can say works.
Social-Anarchism is Anarchism in a socialist foundation, and it's a branch from the socialist school of thought.
No no. I was wrong. Marx did say the state was unnecesary.
