There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
irish travellers?
To explain what is happening. Pykies have an ancient tradition, if a man can kidnap a girl and keep her for two days they are married, (marriage by abduction or marriage by capture). They did that so as to avoid paying the bride price to her family.

Some piously affirm: "The truth is such and such. I know! I see!"
And hold that everything depends upon having the “right” religion.

Gypsys
Odd for us "Country people", decidely nicer and more civilised than they might appear.
The one Gypsy I know best married a "country man" who worked at her father's carnival - it ended VERY badly.
So, I dunno - they seem happy enough and those girls will end up ruling their husabands in most cases.

Pikie is the english term for an Irish Traveller they are not Gypsys nor are they even relatedd to them, they used to be called Tinkers because they were travelling tinsmith who mended pots and pans etc as they moved around. (Note it's not pc now to use the term Tinker as the term has became derogatory)
They have a migrated the same as other Irish people to the UK but they have continued to marry within there small group and naturally have not integrated into UK society like other Irish people as a result.
They still have a fairly nomadic culture so the children can tend to have little or no education, there tendancy to intermarry has a few health implications to put it delicately.
One darker aspect of the group is the resort to criminality which can be hard to prevent due to the tightknit structure of the community a policeman from the settled community will never infiltrate there gangs as there all based on blood ties.
video below is about Paddy Doherty Irish Traveller and all round hard man.
this vid has foul language and scens of intimidation and violence definately not safe for work or kids

No that would be Gypsys, it would be considered an insult to the daughter and her family to NOT pay for a lavish and over the top wedding, they take insults very seriously it would lead to very violent and nasty feuding between the families no doubt. A feud in Limerick over a schoolyard fight has involved the four biggest crime gangs in Limerick as a result.
