Please excuse my terrible puns, but I came across something I had to share with you guys. In Germany, all children learn Latin in school if I'm not mistaken. Well, apparently someone decided that De Bello Gallico isn't cool enough anymore, and that the best way to teach the kids Classical Latin was through the power of Hip-Hop. The result is hilariously cringe-worthy.

You're mistaken. It's wrong, latin can be learned in most schools in 7th grade but it's only a small minority which choose it.

Apparently I don't see any evidence for this replacing Bello Gallico in school.

Okay, I lived with a German family for some time and all their children were taught latin. My German was sketchy, so I may have misunderstood something they said.

I was only making a joke here, don't take it so seriously.

It's difficult to differentiate between a joke and the showing of a fact which is considered funny, especially if you're in a forum and it's not in your own language ;-).

It depends on the Bundesland (State) and the school you are in. In some schools latin is mandatory, but in most you can choose.

That's a very good point! Catullus would no doubt keep them interested. Make them realize that the Romans could be pretty street themselves. Well, Catullus was equestrian, but still.

That probably explains it. Thanks for clearing that up.

IIRC Catull is aprt of our literature for next year. However, this will the last year of latin in a high-level class (Germans in here: English term for Leistungskurs?) so it is nothing to keep the mass of students interested, who get rid of latin as soon as they can.

Which is a dumb move because Latin is mandatory for anyone who wants to study History or related sciences. If I had had Latin at school, my uni curriculum would have been considerably shorter.

I don't know any Bundesland where latin is mandatory, for some special (private) schools it might be true but as far as I know it's not true for any state school.

In germany there is at least one university with the possibility to study "modern" history where no "Latinum" is mandatory.

Yeah... they're probably the ones responsible for all those retards who think that history started in 1789.
