I'm not familiar with either of those mods, but would be glad to become so.
Quirl's game idea looks quite awesome I have to say, but I simply do not feel familiar enough with the setting to do it justice.

i will go take a look at those mods you mentioned.

Rusichi is probably more of a finished product. As I understand it the Magyar Mod hasn't added new cavalry units yet, which is a bit of a shame.

The Rusichi mod looks quite cool I have to say, as for the Magyar one, it just seems a little too unfinished from what I see.

In terms of the Rusichi mod, it seems like a pretty standard game would likely work well, and the system they claim for civil war on faction leader death could add some very interesting dynamics.
Was there any specific type of game you wanted phonics, or just something focused on that culture?

Rusichi was quite tough as I recall, not like that's a bad thing of course.

It is a very cool mod. Personally, I'd be happy with just about anything outside of Central Europe.

I too suffer from central Europe fatigue, unless you go back to antiquity or the classical period. And SS sadly doesn't do the greatest job depicting other cultures accurately, except for the Byzantines.

As for Rusichi, I generally like difficulty, but it might be frustrating for players if people die often.

I'm not sure how vulnerable generals in particular were, but the mod as a whole was very tough, more so than any other I'd played at . I think if I took it more slowly I would have done better on my one try through, though. I'm used to playing even tough mods on VH/VH half asleep, not through any special skill but just familiarity with the base game.

One note on any mod that portrays the faction we play fairly accurately. After the Last of the Romans game (ERE, SS if I recall) in the post game discussion it was brought up that people had a lot of trouble with the names and this hurt roleplaying. There was also some feeling that we should move to a more familiar faction in general and votes led us back towards Central Europe for the next game (I say "towards" because we ended up with France). That was years ago, though, so I'm not sure if not having heavily anglicised names a la vanilla MTW2 would matter as much now.

That's a good point, anything that can be typed on a normal qwerty keyboard is fine for me. Beyond that and it just starts to feel like a chore.

All of the ERE names we had could be typed on a normal keyboard, although pronunciation may have been a bit tough for some.

Some examples, taken from the characters in the final war:

My last character: Arintheos Voutoumatis

-Vartholomaios Ksiros

-Kousinos Sophianos

-Ioannis Komnenos III

I didn't think they were too bad but I can understand why having, for example, 3-4 guys named Ioannis (we did) with different Greek names of varying ease of pronunciation might be more challenging than if they were all named "John". Unfamiliar names with spelling players aren't used may blend together.

Not saying this should be a major factor, just that it came up back then.

I think we can avoid that by making sure people (koff koff ZIM) are aware that charging their characters into banks of spears is unlikely to reap rewards...

I don't recall ever doing anything like that ~:p

My favorite death was my first. Jan van der Pfalz charging into a the rear of a formation of depleted non-spear infantry and dying. I always assumed his horse tripped and he fell off and hit his head.

Here's a couple discussions for what became KotF. The sentiment a few posts down of the second about pronouncing names showed up in both the first thread and a few other places. Discussion topics were spread through a couple threads I'm afraid, so it's mostly in the foggy memories of us old timers (where facts become less and less sure) that the scope of some of the post game/ pre game talks come out.

Dude stop giving everyone ideas about how we should have games set in England France or Germany so everyone can feel nice and comfy!

I want to be called SZILÁRD!

I'm hoping for a ton of consonants in my name, personally. Either that or playing as Spain.

I only bring it up because it was a surprisingly big issue both pre-LotR discussion, post LotR, and pre-KotF.

I think I would like to stay out of France/England/HRE unless we do a 100 years war game, but Spain could be quite fun actually. My preference would be the Americas game, but a standard one could be fun as well with the reconquista.

Plus, the names are familiar without being completely mundane.

I have to say that personally neither the Americas campaign nor Spain really appeals. I might join a Spain one but I wouldn't get involved with the Americas. Not into beating up on indigenous peoples!

Fine by me, feel free to voice any particular ideas you have for a magyar game. I will look into Rusichi more closely and try to draft some ideas in the next few days.

Might be good to post a thread to find out who else might be interested and what they think about the setting, before you do too much work.

Much as I have my opinions they may not be shared and we can't play an RPG with just me and you!

At least you guys have swords and pikes to fight back with! I quit the only time I played Americas after my fifth or sixth comfortable long distance gunpowder massacre of defenseless villagers. It just seemed really wrong!

The way I see it, in every war you are being horrible and cruel to somebody, and that overwhelms any concerns about who lived there first to me.

In that type of situation I see what you mean, but that type of things is happening in medieval battles to if you think about drafted peasants beings stood in front of armored knights.

I never actually had the patience to play vanilla up until America appears, but I've heard some horrid accounts of half-naked Aztecs massacring Dismounted Chivalric Knights by the boatloads. At least in vanilla no cavalry = dead conquistadores. By the way, if we ever set up a hotseat for the Americas and you guys let me play the Apache I'd wipe the floor with New Spain. Having Jihads + 15/15 melle/ranged attack bowmen? Bring it on gunpowder boys

Ya the gunpowder units in Americas are actually quite underwhelming in my opinion, it all comes down to mounted units, which wipe the floor with anything that isn't mounted.

Cavalry rules lead battles, that's the rule. They'd also lose horribly in autocalc vs. the natives.

I'm away from tomorow until Tuesday. Subs as follows:

LS - Cecil
TSI - Nightbringer
WiC - I prefer no one as this turn is too important. Just postpone until Tuesday evening if it comes up.
CoG! - Thanatos
WotK2 - anyone but Monkey
EotA - any one of my allies who knows how to siege assault with an Elven faction without giving casualties
MoT - extremely unlikely that my turn will come up having just played it. If it does, stall until Tuesday.

I had an idea the other day when I was sitting around wishing I had a hotseat turn to play. It's not particularly original but what about a communal singleplayer co-op game where we play one turn each in no particular order? basically anyone can play the turn so long as they didn't play the turn before - just grab the save, post to say you have it, return it within 24 hours with a few basic notes for the rest of the players

Would anyone be interested in that? We could pick a mod that not many have played, maybe something really unusual, or an old favourite that hasn't been dusted off for a while.

I'd be into Broken Crescent 1.05 but BI was also mentioned and that could be fun too. Or an EB campaign?

I would be up for that, no particular preference with mods though.

Also, I need myth's password to sub him in TSI, but I am not really sure how to get it.
