Default The Funniest Thing I Have Ever Read In My Entire Life

    http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...girl-ends-life

For days, Mumpy would listen quietly as the elders discussed how only an eye surgery could save her father's vision and a kidney transplant her brother's life. But both surgeries were beyond the family's meagre means. So, Mumpy hit upon a plan, which to her 12-year-old mind seemed the answer to all troubles. She would kill herself, which would save the dowry, too, and her organs would give her loved ones back their lives.Mumpy did stick to her plan. But the suicide note in which she had scribbled down her wishes was found the day after she was cremated.

Granted it's sad to but only because her dowry went into her decison making

Everything else is grade a comedy

    I have plenty of empathy

Just none for a society which imposes second class citizenship on their women

A boy would never have the same thought process in India, The two handicapped women would simply die

And of course the poison she took probably rendered heard kidneys useless. Kids these days always about the instant gratafacation

So you think that the 12 year old girl killed herself because she was oppressed and not because she loved her father and brother?
    This is not funny.
    It is sad and touching.

If that's the case, then it makes the story even more tragic, because it means the girl was a victim of her culture. Not really something to laugh about.

And seeing how she was 12 years old, you can't blame her for not thinking clearly. Whether her actions were influenced by the chauvinism of her culture or not, her motives were selfless all the same.

Well no, it is not that simple. But the fact a dowry was even mentioned is mind bowling

Becuase remember kids, women are a burden

I would say the culture she was conditioned in had allot to do with it.

But other than that it has the trappings of a sketch

Nope, I'm pretty sure this have everything to do with India still treating it's women as second class citizens-- otherwise one of the healthier elders would do the honor instead of bucking the responsibility on a 12 year old girl. Cowardly for the father and brother, selfless for the girl.

The practice of taking dowry is shameful, but you don't see girls committing suicide just to save their parents that money.
The article also mentions that her sister went to school, despite them being relatively poorer, which means they weren't all that backward.

I agree that dowry must have been a factor, but I cannot believe that it weighed more over her than the well being of her family.
And I'd rather not see her death be reduced to a reason to bash social evils.

I don't think she discussed killing herself with her elders, for them to stop her and kill themselves instead.

That's right, usually the adults kill the girls, don't they? Either the parents do it because they consider the girl a burden, or the husband does it after pocketing the dowry.

Since we are discussing how funny these terrible female injustices are, I will relay an even funnier fact to you guys:

A woman's "right" to choose, particularly in developing and overcrowded countries, has resulted in a several-point shift from the normal 50-50 male to female ratio, anywhere from 53-47 to 60-40, and even higher within certain demographics inside of countries. When women are greatly outnumbered by men, they are inherently at a disadvantage (even more so in poor and/or muslim countries) and tend to be treated more like cattle sex objects and prizes than equals. This leads to a worse quality of life and shorter lifespans, which in turns will lead to more abortions.

    So, abortion is killing women.

I cannot recall any incident of a parent killing their adult daughter so that they don't have to pay her dowry. If an adult girl is killed due to lack of dowry, that is something that happens in her in-laws house and not because her parents did not want her, but because her in-laws are criminals. Such cases are rare these days, and when they come to light, the perpetrators are punished harshly.

The killing of girl child while still in the womb, or female feticide, is still slightly more prevalent, but even that is now something that occurs only in the most backward of classes. Specially since few hospitals/doctors now agree to do such a thing.

Seen a docu on the telly here a while back where some NGO types were talking about how there were fellas going round villages offering scans to women so they could I suppose get rid of it if it's a girl.
