I could challenge Nightbringer and see what his duel score is, on my way towards death.

If he wins, he's either a god or he's a Jotun. And I think he will claim god before that happens.

That is exactly what I am saying we should be doing. And frankly, does it matter if I claim god? the Gods have done nothing helpful as far as I can see, so why not just kill very powerful players as we either lose a useless god (the most powerful ones that will be able to out-duel Jotun's are already dead) or snag a scum.
