Portugal vs France Boats

i got the campaing difficulty in hard and battle in medium and i got one boat with 51 one man and soo did france the same tipe of boat
and they won i don't know how and this is happend to me alot like i have superior number of man and they win against me with the same type of boats. Portugal good execellent naval units but i don't know why i'm losing since is one of the strong thing in portugal and in france is not even told anything about they naval unit being good

Depends on the type of boat. There is a random element to it. It's bad because naval battles are forced autoresolve in this game. I've had battles where I've autoresolved in clear victories but If I do something else when I load to change the random factor (spend money, fight another battle, etc.) It turns out into a close defeat. So you just got the smaller roll I suppose. Anyway Portugal's naval dominance comes much later when the higher quality ships are available.
