    Default Midgardsaga III Summary thread.

Welcome to the third game in the Midgard saga.
It is not a sequel to the second game, but a standalone game that has a slightly different story line.

    This game will still be similar and will have many of the features of the previous games;
Since this is an anniversary, I will not do too many changes from the previous game.
Consider this a Midgard retro game based heavily on the previous two games.

    The setting is ancient Norway.
The Kings of the west and retinues are gathered at Hafrsfjord to discuss the possible invasion of a usurper King called Harald Hårfagre.
They blame King Eirik of Hordaland and his daughter for putting the idea of gathering Norway into one kingdom to Harald’s mind.
They all want peace as a war on this scale would tax the small kingdoms of the west coast greatly.

A few Jotun has infiltrated the entourage and will try to kill all the Kings at this gathering, hoping to make sure this war will happen and maybe escalate it to an all encompassing war
in the Viking world that would put an end to all there is.

    The Roles:

Kings – this will be the Kings from the small kingdoms of the west coast of Norway
    Jotun – the Mafiosi
    Pro-town roles
Townies (various roles in the retinue of the Kings)

The Jotun's main object is to kill the Kings + the pro-town roles. If they are able to do so they will win.

    The Rules:

Dead may post but not vote.
No screen shots of my PMs … You might try to claim a role by either quoting PMs or making one up.
All roles are within the Norse realm.
Remember to stay active; the roles depend on you being active and WoOs (Wrath of Odinn) will create advantages to the Jotun. Jotun will never be WoO’ed.

Roles that require sending PMs will do so at their discretion. However there will be a deadline. If they get sent in after that deadline they will not be used for that round.
The timer starts when I post my: “The game has started”. I will send my PMs and you will return PMs if you role requires it.
In short; you have 24 hours to pm me after I start the game. This will give you plenty of time to get to know your in-game buddies/allies and devise a strategy.
There will be a 24 hour session between every intermission. i.e. between the posting of the night kills and the posting of the lynching and then again until the next kill post.

    Voting: use the standard. I.e.

    Vote: Sigurd
    Unvote: Sigurd Vote: Sasaki.

Do not edit posts containing votes. The original vote will be the vote.

Holmgang: (passage of arms, lit.transl: walk the islet)
After every lynching and in the intermission before the next night, you have the opportunity to challenge another player to a duel.
The first Holmgang will be conducted after the first killings and the first lynching.

There will be some sore feelings after the lynching since someone’s cook or serf man got executed. Others might gloat and smirk.
This will generate a little disturbance at the Hafrsfjord encampment and the normal way of settling this is by Holmgang. If you want to challenge another player, the procedure is:

    Challenge: Sigurd.

The first 6 challenges will be considered and by the randomness of random.org one will be picked.
Players can not spam challenge. Only one challenge pr. player will be added to the list of possible Holmgangs (usually the first).
Challenges are binding and you can’t unchallenge.
This Holmgang will be narrated with the kills the following night.
One of the combatants will usually die.
Every role will get a Holmgang ability that will determine the outcome of such a duel.
There is still luck involved in the form of rolling dice and a player with low abilities might be able to get in a lucky shot against a player with higher abilities.
You will not be able to conduct two Holmgang in succession. You will lose some blood during such a duel and you will need to rest during the next Holmgang session.
Luckily you all suffer from Viking sickness and will recover quickly. No honourable Viking will challenge a player in his resting. If someone does – that challenge will not be considered.

I will use a new feature to determine the outcome of these fights. This time around they will be quite public.
In risk style the attacker is at disadvantage since matching dice will favour the defender.
In-game dice that can only be used once in a post and not edited after submitted, will be used in this game.

Holmgang as a tool will need to tested out and see how this can affect the town effort.

    Round 1

News of the usurper king of Vestfold and lately Sogn had reached the kingdoms of the west coast. This eastlander had according to a serf woman wooed King Eirik of Hordaland’s daughter Gyda.
This serf woman had told the exact words of Gyda’s decline: “Why should I marry someone as petty as you. Come back when you have conquered the whole of Norway”.

Harald Hårfagre (Finehair) had not been insulted, but took the challenge. Words from other parts of the realm told of armies gathering under the leadership of Harald and his intentions were clear. He means to gather the whole of Norway under one King, namely himself.
The Kings of the West Coast don't want to give their kingdoms over to some usurper King of the East and now a small kingdom of the West.
But it will turn into bloody business unless they can gather a large enough host that will discourage Harald in his quest.

The Kings have agreed to meet in secret at Hafrsfjord in Rogaland with small retinues to discuss what best to do with Harald.
They have agreed to have this meeting under Ting rules and as such have sent for a Hovgod to preside over this meeting.

    ----

The Kings and their retinues arrived one by one and were all met by the elderly man who would be the law speaker at this meeting.
He assigned an area of the place to each retinue with the order of pitching their tents in a semi circle around the area he had designated the meeting to take place.
When all the Kings and their retinues had arrived and gathered before the law speaker, he declared the meeting under Ting laws in session.
This meant that everyone was equal under the law. Kings and commoners would eat at the same table and have equal privileges and rights.
No disputes would be settled in private, but had to be heard publically. Petty disputes could be settled by Holmgang, but only under the law speaker’s approval.

    The Game has begun…

When you get your PM’s and if your role needs to send me a PM
You have until tomorrow at 22:00 GMT to send it (deadline)

    Good Luck People!

    Night 1
The journey to Hafrsfjord had been long for most of the retinues and rest would be welcome.
Tents and other facilities had to be taken care of first and the men were even more tired when all had settled in properly. Food were prepared and Kings and common men took their share to their sleeping place expecting sudden collapse when bellies were filled.

One such man was Sander Magnusson, a War Veteran from Sunnmøre. He had a large tankard of delicious mead that he really looked forward to enjoying with his meal. The journey had been strenuous on his old frame and the alcoholic beverage would dull some of the pain he felt in his small back. He got to his sleeping place and sat down. The hot food smelled delicious and he took a large spoonful of the oat porridge stuffed with pieces of apple and honey. That was just what he needed, but more so the beverage standing next to him. He took the tankard and smelled the liquid in it. Strange, it didn’t have the smell of fermented honey and fruit. This close to the fjord it only smelled like the sea. Ah, well it surely would taste good. He took a long sip before the salty taste hit home. He never noticed the little fish called Fjesing who came into his mouth with the sea water. The little thing is very poisonous and as it slid down his throat its barbs left a smear of venom in the angry wounds they caused. Sander collapsed sensing his throat growing thick. He couldn’t utter a word as his windpipe got crushed by the swelling from the venom. The pain was excruciating as the venom cascaded through his blood stream. He could feel muscle and blood vessels disintegrate where the venom went. He tried to scream but no air could find its way down to his lunges. He just lay on his back unable to move and welcomed the darkness that finally enveloped him.

Gunnar Grove a serf and soldier from Rogaland had finished his meal when he heard a primeval roar nearby. He sat up and saw a shadow moving fast towards him. This was strange he thought as a man wearing nearly no clothes sprang into the camp fire light. The man's eyes red and mouth foaming, Gunnar was about to decide if this was a danger or not when the man took Gunnar by the head and smashed a stone into his temple. Gunnar was gone to distant pastures in an instant. The man suddenly calmed down and looked confused. He returned to where he came from, shaking his head, not knowing what had just happened.

Knud Bamse Jardarsson from Hålogaland needed the use of the privy and moved into the nearby woods when he heard a gargling sound behind him. He turned and saw a well known man in his small clothes charging him with a long Frankish blade. Knud was about to protest when the sword cut through his throat with such force that the beheading didn't cause the head to drop. Knud’s body not having its faculties, collapsed in a heap, head rolling into the privy.

Steinar Sturlasson a War Veteran from Fjordane had finished his meal and were oblivious to the ruckus happening in the nearby camps. He felt cold and inched towards the campfire under his blanket. He wished he could get a little warmer.
The campfire, only hot embers in the dark, suddenly blazed up and flames and sparks started dancing around him. The flames grew hotter and more intense and the air around Steinar stated to boil. The heat got so intense that Steinar tried to flee coughing in the unbreathable air. The sparks and flames jumped onto him without burning his clothes or skin. He started to scream but flames jumped into his open throad and singed his windpipe so badly that only gargling sounds could be heard. Steinar was burning from inside out and the pain was excruciating. Soon only the blackened remains of his once strong frame dropped into the mud. He never saw the smirking shadow leaving camp into the forest.

Some commotion came out of these events but for the most part, weary men rested through the night.
It was not until dawn that the retinues realised truly what had happened.
Four men perished during the night, some mysteriously and others obviously. The camps losing men started accusing others of murder and the Hovgod had to step in.
The men from Sunnmøre, Rogaland, Fjordane and Hålogaland all accused each other for the evil deeds committed. The elderly man heard each of their complaints; two of the killings caught his attention and he followed up with lengthy inquiries. The other two he just brushed off with a smirk.
The camps wanted justice and the Hovgod had to settle this by popular vote to stop a possible blood feud. He asked them to investigate because it was obvious that the killings had been done by someone in the camps. There were no settlements for several leagues.

Return later with a candidate that you think is the culprit and justice can be somewhat satisfied.

You have until 22:00 GMT to find us a candidate for this day’s lynching.

    Day 1

There were a lot of arguments and nearly no agreement among the retinues of the Kingdoms. Vocal warriors put forth candidates but others didn’t agree and put forth their own candidates. There was finally a public vote and the retinues returned to the Hovgod to present their results.

    Tally:

    Visorslash : 4 (‘khaan, Kage, Renata, B_Ray)

    B_Ray : 3
    (Chaotix, TheLastDays, ELITEKING )
    Believer : 3 (ATPG, W&F, Diamondeye)
TheLastDays : 3 (classical, Andres, Mr. Stuka, Visorslash)
    Askthepizzaguy : 2 (Believer, Khazaar)
Mr. Stuka : 2 (Tratorix, TinCow)
    Nightbringer : 2 (We:D, autolycus)
Tratorix : 2 (Mr. Stuka, Major Robert Dump)
    Glyphz : 1 (Captain Blackadder)
Death is Yonder : 1 (Ironside)
    Woad&fangs : 1 (robbiecon)
    Thefluffyone93 : 1 (glyphz)
    GeneralHankerchief : 1 (DiY)

    Abstains courteously : 1 (Roink)
Not voting : 4 (GH, Thefluff, Romanic, Nightbringer)

The Hovgod looked at the tally and displeasure was radiating from his eyes.
The list of candidates were many and the votes were spread nearly equally between them. He counted and recounted again to make sure that there was in fact one candidate in lead. And there was. The Hovgod put down the tally and looked out over the eagerly awaiting retinues of the Kingdoms of the West.

There seems to be a candidate that has received the most votes. I was not sure, but careful recounting has put Styggbjørn Braute as our candidate to be executed and pay justice the blood of last night’s murders.

The man who was Styggbjørn couldn’t believe his own ears. This was absurd. He always got in trouble for no apparent reason. Now this. The gods surely didn’t show him any favours. Not dying on a battlefield would greatly decrease his chances of dining at the table of Odinn. Styggbjørn looked at the people around him and decided to bolt. Maybe fleeing to Harald Hårfagre would put him in favour with the gods. He turned slowly and walked to the edge of the eagerly awaiting crowd. They all looked at him wondering what would happen next. The Hovgod looked amused and asked Styggbjørn where he thought he was going. Styggbjørn simply said; I am leaving, and then bolted for one of the smaller boats that weren’t dragged up on the beach. The Hovgod turned to the crowd; Are there any archers among us? Several hands were raised. He picked one and came to his side. Draw an arrow on that bow. The man did as requested and the Hovgod whispered something in the man’s ear which caused the man to adjust his aim.

Styggbjørn had reached the boat and had it on the oars in a heartbeat. He couldn’t believe he was getting away. He was out of bow shot now and they would have to get into boats to catch him. Suddenly he felt a piercing pain in his left shoulder that traveled into his torso. He looked over to his shoulder and saw an arrow logged there in a steep angle. Oh no, that might have hit his heart. He could feel the strength leaving him and slumped into darkness.
Now that was an amazing shot, the Hovgod told the man who looked questioningly at his bow. I didn’t know that you were such a good shot.
The crowd cheered that justice had been met. But there were people belonging to the Sunnmøre camp who were not too happy about these events.

The Hovgod continued this day’s agenda and the discussion of what to do with Harald Hårfagre started.

    Visorslash has been lynched

Round two is about to start. Challenges is now open. PMs from those with abilities can be sent.

    Round 2

    Night 2

There were still some bad feelings among the retinue after the long meeting discussing what to do about the usurper king Harald.
There were especially bad feelings in the Sunnmøre camp that just lost one of their own to todays execution. They blamed their neighbours Nordmøre who apparently had not lost any of their own. There were a few fist fights and one Nordmøre man got angry and hurled a rock at a Sunnmøre warrior. The warrior from Sunnmøre ducked and the rock hit a grizzly looking elderly warrior who stood watching. The rock hit just below the eye and apparently caused some pain. Blood flowing down his face the grizzly looking warrior drew his warhammer from its strap on his back. You shall pay for such insolence young pup. The Hovgod standing nearby enquired about the commotion. Seeing the weapon drawn he reminded the grizzly looking warrior about the rules for such things at this meeting. The grizzly man turned to the Hovgod; I ask for official retribution for this insolence. Blood has been drawn and only blood can pay for it. I want Holmgang.
The Hovgod could only agree; So be it.

The grizzly looking man smiled as the young pup from Nørdmøre drew his steel and picked up a shield. It was a particular fine specimen of conquered steel from the south lands. Well tended and apparently in the hands of a skilled man. The grizzly looking warrior attacked first swinging his mighty battle hammer in for a quick end to this fight. The younger man ducked and sliced the thigh of the other man. It was not a serious wound but it infuriated the grizzly warrior. He brought the hammer up as a follow through from the last swing and smashed into the shield arm. The younger warrior buckled from the hard impact on the shield. He felt as if something had broken in his arm. As the grizzly warrior continued to swing the large hammer, the younger man ducked under the swing and slashed in a spin taking the grizzly warrior in the back. A red smear started to appear on the grizzly warriors back. As the man screamed in pain the younger warrior got in another nick of his sword point. This just made the grizzly warrior go berserk. The warhammer flew in wide slashed with incredible force. Each of them would end the younger warrior’s life should they hit home. Even with the bad shield arm the younger warrior evaded the swings and countered with two fine strikes leaving new wounds on the grizzly warriors flesh. The Grizzly warrior changed tactics and kicked the younger man down after a swing of the hammer to his head. The younger man tumbled down and just avoided a crushing blow to the place where he was a fraction of a second before; he swung his blade and caught the grizzly man in his face cutting into the eye socket. The grizzly warrior was beyond feeling pain and just continued swinging the hammer. The young warrior was seriously tired and got his shield up to block another blow. But the hammer came down with such force that it completely disintegrated the shield and hit him in the base of his throat crushing both windpipe and vertebrae. The younger man dropped dead to the ground.
The Nordmøre camp had got their first fallen.

The night was upon the camp and people found their rest in their respective camps.
One such man was Jarn Carsteinsson.
He could not sleep much a wink due to the happenings of the last day. The chill of the night air did not help. After spending half the night in a futile attempt to get some rest, he gave up & took a walk around the camp. He stopped by a campfire to stretch his tired muscles, his back to the fire. The warmth felt good he thought and so he lingered. There was a pot there with some delicious smelling stew and helped himself to it. The stew made him feel a little weird. He did not notice the flame grow and began to tower behind him. When he finally noticed, his shadow has stretched far in front of him and it was far too late to flee. A huge, massive hand covered his face and upper torso, grabbed him and swiftly dragged him into the raging flames...

Sveyn Gunnarsson of Hordaland was patrolling his king’s ships by the beach when he saw a shadow lurking over by his King’s beached longship. He walked slowly over to the area acting as normal as possible when the sky suddenly grew dark and the wind started to blow violently. The longship's sail caught in the wind and started rocking back and forth. By Odinn, he had to save the ship because it would break on the rocks in the sand should it continue to rock like that. He could already hear the planks groan. He ran for the ship to take down that sail. The wind suddenly focused on the sail and pulled the ship along. Sveyn could not believe his own eyes and turned to flee because the ship was gaining momentum and came right for him. Something caught his foot in the sand and he bellied into the beach. The 80 ton longship crushed Sveyn’s body with its keel as it slid over him, burying his body under it. The wind and the darkness cleared and the summer night was yet again silent. Some might wonder why the longship of Erik of Hordaland was dragged so far up the beach, but it would take days and the ship being dragged back down the beach to discover the crushed body that was under it.

The morning came and people began to stir. A burned body was found in the Romsdal camp and people started crying foul. Today’s meeting would start as the one yesterday with an investigation and a payment to justice. Blood for blood as was the tradition of this people.

Start voting. Voting ends at 22:00 GMT tomorrow

    Day 2

The voting this day was long and there were many candidates shifting taking the lead.
It took the retinues every minute of the allotted time to finally agree on a candidate.
The Hovgod was slumbering when the tally was given him. He took a quick glance at it:

    Tally:

Mr. Stuka : 6 (ATPG, Believer, Renata, TinCow, Tratorix, w&f)

    Tratorix : 5
    (Chaotix, DiY, ELITE, Kage, Nightbringer)
    classical_hero : 4 (autolycus, B_Ray, Diamondeye, ‘khaan)
    B_Ray : 1 (Romanic )
    GeneralHankerchief : 1 (Khazaar)
    Khazaar : 1 (GH)
    Renata : 1 (Reenk)
    TinCow : 1 (classical)

Not voting : 7 (Andres, glyphz, Mr. Stuka, Robbie, Thefluff, TheLastDays, WE:D)

So you barely managed to get a candidate in lead this time as well. And I see there are several not lodging a vote. This is barely acceptable considering we are dealing with someone’s life here.
He looked over the retinues. Could the man named Thorvald Toresson be brought forth?
The men from Nordmøre gasped as they heard the name being called out.
A well toned warrior stepped out of the Nordmøre retinue and walked with sure steps toward the Hovgod who stood smirking in the circle of men.
They have chosen you as the payment to justice for the murder last night. Blood for blood. Do you have anything you wish to say?
The warrior looked with ice cold eyes over the eager crowds. I am worried about my King. Who will protect him now?
I am sure some arrangements can be made. The Hovgod looked into the ice cold eyes, searching. I see a man who will serve Odinn and as such, I wish you adieu. The Hovgod brought his knife which he had hidden in his sleeve in a fluid but powerful stab, which pierced the warrior’s heart. Blood started flowing out of the wound and Thorvald buckled.
Soon life disappeared from those icy eyes.

The Hovgod twirled and stated: Well, should we continue where we left off yesterday?

Challenges can be given from this point. If you have already challenged after the deadline, I will count those as valid.
PMs from those who can – deadline 22:00 GMT Saturday the 16th of July

    Round 3

    Night 3

    Results Holmgang # 2

The execution of a dear and respected member of the Nordmøre camp didn’t go well with the Nørdmøre retinue. They threw wild accusations around and some minor fights ensued.
Some members of the Romsdal retinue laughed at the feeble Nordmøre efforts to share blame of the killings. A Nordmøre man took a swing at a prominent member of the Romsdal retinue and landed a hook to his jaw. The Romsdal man stumbled, but got up again with speed and swung at the Nordmøre man. The swing was so powerful that he couldn’t stop when the Nordmøre ducked. The fist took a bystander in the nose and the man went down nose bloody and broken. The bystander leaped up in seconds and felt his broken nose with surprise. Then he eyed the one who caused it. You and me, Holmgang now.
The Hovgod came rushing to the place and was about to object when he saw the injured man’s cold eyes. Blood for blood then.

The bystander drew his polished sword and attacked at once. The Romsdal man who would fight this Holmgang didn’t have time to draw his, so he grabbed a fistful of sand and threw it into the eyes of the bystander coming towards him at full speed. The bystander roared when he was temporary blinded and the Romsdal man kneed him in the groin as he passed and kicked him in the small back. The bystander went down and the Romsdal man had time to draw his sword and get ready before the bystander was back up slashing wildly around him. One of those swings did find its way home and a crimson stain erupted from the shoulder of the Romsdal man.
The Romsdal man took the next swings on his blade and cut into the forearm of the attacker, but one did get through his guard and left a red angry wound across his ribs.
The next wound was dealt by the Romsdal man though, and a series of slashes left the bystander bleeding on the ground ready to yield. But this was not the end the Romsdal man had hoped for. The bystander all though tired looking leaped to his feet with new vigour and with immense force knocked the guard of the Romsdal man aside and dealt two wounds to his arms before running him through. The Romsdal man looked incredulously at the hilt hugging his rib cage. Blood started running fast from his torso and with it his life.

Night was settling on the camp and Arnvid Torarinsson felt especially rejuvenated but tired all the same. It was time for some shut eye. Arnvid went to his resting place and started honing his fine blade, something he did every night. It was important that the tools of a warrior were well tended. While honing his sword, Arnvid heard a commotion behind him. He looked over his shoulder and was barely able to duck his head under a slash of steel that would have taken his head off. A half naked man with crazed eyes and foam around his mouth was desperately trying to kill him. Arnvid got to his feet thinking this man was not right in the head. Arnvid was already holding his perfectly balanced blade honed with razor edges. The apparently crazed man turned with incredible speed and lunged for Arnvid. Arnvid had for some reason no problems avoiding the attacks from the crazed man. The crazed man hacked and slashed wildly but with enough force should any of them hit Arnvid, he would lose a limb or worse. The attacks grew to a crescendo and Arnvid avoided them all.
The man was finally getting tired and realizing he could not finish what he had started ran into the woods, leaving a panting Arnvid. He would need to hone that blade again.

The grizzled warrior from the last Holmgang tended his wounds. It was time to change the bandages. He removed the one over his left eye. As painful as it was he calmly stripped the wound for clinging bandage without so much as a wince.
He was about to reaply with fresh bandage when he heard breaking noises in the woods just behind him. He got up and looked around. He never saw the big pine that swung into the side of his head. There was a blinding flash and he felt his body flying through the air into the woods finally hitting another pine. His broken body slammed to the ground and his head swam. It would take some time to recover from this injury was his first though. He felt the ground shake in a set interval, as if something enormous was walking towards him. A inhumanly dark voice split the night; So, you have problems keeping your eyes in this world too? The grizzled warrior turned his head and saw a large darkness towering over him, yellow eyes beaming in the darkness. I told you this was our man, the voice continued. Another shadow appeared with nearly identical beaming eyes. The grizzled man, saw the first shadow move and felt and heard a ripple in the ground. He tried to move, but his body wasn’t up to it. He felt every bone crush in his body as a boulder the size of a long ship came crashing down atop him. He was still conscious when he felt the ground burn around him turning the boulder molten. This was more than he could handle and released his hold on this world. Fresh air blew in his face as he stood staring over the Bitterfrost Bridge. It would be a while before he would be able to go back over to Midgard.

The morning came and it was apparent that another man was missing and a story of a survivor after an attempted murder told them that there were still murderers among them.
The Hovgod asked them to again find a candidate and hopefully the very someone who had performed the deeds these last few nights.
